There follows a chapter on linear codes that begins with a discussion of vector spaces over the field (actual symbol not reproducible). The penultimate chapter is devoted to a study of the Hamming, Golay, and Reed-Muller families of codes, along with some decimal codes and some codes obtained from Latin squares. The final chapter contains a brief introduction to cyclic codes.

I have used this book in my course of coding theory. In my experience it is enough clear for the students and cover the fundamental material with enough deep from introductory point of view. From this book the reader can continue the study of subject in a more theoretical fashion or in the more applied one. It is a good text book for a introductory course, and I have seen several other books. However I think the author spend so much time in chapter four. The book is well strutured for a one semester course.

I have always had a fascination with major highways, especially the US Interstate system. It is certainly one of man's greater achievements, both from an engineering and political level. Road building and architecture have always been among the crowning achievements of nations, and the US is no exception. I had high hopes for this book.=== The Good Stuff ===* Earl Swift would certainly subscribe to the theory that the political side of road-building is more interesting and more difficult than the actual engineering side. Given the current state of US highway building, it might appear that he is correct-more roads have been shot down over politics than insurmountable engineering problems. Swift does a masterful job of capturing this conflict.* We meet an interesting cast of characters, and Swift does a nice job at capturing the personalities and motivations of these people. There are certainly the stereotypical engineers-you can almost see the slide rules- planning the routes; the finance guys figuring out how to pay for it; and the political operators-managing what is possible. But there are also the citizens who refused to have their city gutted by a cross-town expressway, and environmentalists and historical preservationists who stand up for their principles.* Much of the history presented was new to me. I had always subscribed to the "Eisenhower cross-country trip" theory of how the Interstate system came about. Swift makes a convincing case that much of the work was done prior to Eisenhower, some as early as WWI, and much of it under Roosevelt. Eisenhower comes across as a sort of final enabler, and someone who wasn't really paying attention anyway.* We see some of the dealing that went on to make the project happen. There was the usual government accounting rituals, where money spent isn't really money spent. Swift captures some of this, but spares us the more mundane details of trust funds, bond issues and off-budget shenanigans.=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===* I am an engineer, and of course was hoping for at least some highlights of the civil engineering that went on. There is precious little of that in the book, other than to say that certain parts of the system were difficult. That is certainly true- take a ride on I-70 through Glenwood Canyon, Colorado and you can't help but shake your head that the road even exists. But Swift doesn't give us any details of how it was done, how long it took, how much it cost, or any of the techniques used.* The early part of the book describes several of the early route proposals for a national highway system. Unfortunately there are no maps of these, and the descriptions are vague enough to be borderline useless in understanding them. Certainly a few maps would have been appreciated. Some of these can be found online, but it takes a bit of effort.* Swift sidesteps much of the controversy of the Interstate system. He gets caught up in the urban routing of I70 in Baltimore, an interesting story, but avoids discussion of any of the larger alignment issues. For example, Philadelphia is a very large city, and a major port, but not served by a major east-west artery. I80 is 70 miles to the north, and I70 terminates to the south in Baltimore. I76 does serve Philadelphia, but is rather a minor interstate, connecting Philadelphia to Pittsburgh and I80. No doubt there was quite a political battle about that, but no mention of it in the book. Doubtless other battles ensued.=== Summary ====The book was an excellent treatise on the political side of building the Interstate Highway system, and I enjoyed the look at parts of the tale I hadn't heard before. The author captures the personalities and dedication of a group of civil servants determined to make the project a reality, and gives a reasonably comprehensive overview of the planning process. However, he skips over some areas that I would have preferred to see included, the most serious of which is the actual mechanics of moving dirt and concrete.

I think this is an important book that presents the definitive history of how the interstate highway system came to be and how America was changed by it. It is chock full of well researched and referenced facts and details, but therein also lies its weakness.As a textbook it is an admirable work, but as a piece of popular non-fiction it is probably more than most people want to know, way more. Unfortunately, this reader found it to be intensely boring for far too many pages. I longed for an abridged edition of perhaps 100 pages less that would tell the main story with fewer side paths.On the plus side, the sections that deal with the resistance the road builders encountered in many urban areas were a revelation and explains why so many of these urban interstates are such disasters. Clearly, one size does not fit all when it comes to road building.He also highlights why so many of these roads are now falling into ruin and our government's woefully inadequate programs for maintaining them. Simply put, roads have a lifespan like everything else and must be periodically rebuilt at high cost if they are to continue to serve their intended purpose.

This was a good book, well-written and enjoyable. Not the greatest-book-I've-ever-read-changed-my-life, but a very good read. This is a book for those who may think, "Read a book about the interstate? How boring is that?" Read it! It's a great history and you will see the impact of perseverance, hard work, luck, political will - and lack of political will - vision and money - and lack of money - all combining to create the biggest public works project in the history of the world. The pyramids only claim to fame over the US Interstate Highway System is that they are 6,000 years older and still standing without any maintenance... (then again, the pyramids were never used very much star they were built!) You'll find out things that we take for granted every day were not even thought about - let alone accepted - for a long time, such as the concept of "paved roads"! Why are they called "freeways"? How did entry lanes, exit lanes and passing lanes come about? Why wasn't everything obvious at the time of early road development? All of us use our nation's highways everyday, and this interesting history is a good read about them, revealing fascinating reasons why things happened, how they happened - and how they almost didn't... well worth your time.

I am someone who is a victim of statin poisoning, who almost died as a result of this "medicine." I am much better since stopping the statin three years ago, but the damage lingers. My MD is now looking for a "lupus" diagnosis, due to my symptoms, and because I have had a positive ANA test, which sometimes is an indicator of "lupus."This book details the scientific evidence for drug (often statins) induced "auto-immune" problems, and specifically "lupus." The science on a cellular level is discussed in detail. At the same time it is easily digested by the layman. It is very well explained and presented, with studies to back it up.It is a wonderfully positive presentation which is 100% based on "do no harm." This is something that the current medical protocols, established by Big Pharma controlled education and government agencies, and the medical establishment, has forgotten. Our cells need to stop being poisoned, and need proper nutrition in order to properly function and reproduce. The body can not heal properly without this. This book gives the details on what to avoid, and what you need nutritionaly in order to take matters into your own hands, and give your body all the vital nutrients it needs to fix itself. I feel better already, having begun to make changes in my diet.I look out the window at the parking lot my workplace shares with the CVS pharmacy. I see soda pop on sale week after week, and people coming out with shopping carts full of the stuff. (Poison!) I see the people having trouble moving, as they get in and out of their cars with difficulty. They faithfully carry their little bags with their prescriptions filled. Often statins, no doubt. It is like a different type of "murder-suicide." Poisoned by Big Pharma on the one hand, and self-inflicted poisoning from the big agri-business sellers of phosphoric-acid laced poison.  All Over Coffee is one of the best sketchbooks I've ever seen, and now one of my favourites.All Over Coffee is actually a comic strip for the San Francisco Chronicle. It's a comic strip without the comic. The strip is about San Francisco paired together with Paul Madonna's writings. The book doesn't collect all the strips, but you wish it did when you're on page one.Paul Madonna's art is wonderful. His style is loose yet controlled. The location drawings of San Francisco evoke a strong sense of presence, of being there, looking through Paul Madonna's eyes.Each piece is rendered with beautiful ink wash, tones carefully placed. Even the texture of the paper he uses seeps through to give the drawing personality.The architectural details are captured wonderfully making this a book that you always go back to, to get inspired. In some ways, you can never finish reading this book because of that.Highly recommended.(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

I have never written a review of anything, but Paul Madonna's "All Over Coffee" is so brilliant, I can't not write one. "All Over Coffee" is not just a comic that appears in the SFC, or, maybe, to some, that's all it is. But if you take the time to look at each drawing and really reflect on it, the drawing and accompanying text will likely become so much more. Some drawings and textss are simply windows into poignant moments, but others are so startling and arresting that reading them will make you stop what you are doing and reconsider what you've just seen and read, only this time, with regard to your particular station and situation in life. I bought this book at City Lights Bookstore while visiting San Francisco in June 2008. The cover interested me, so I picked it up and looked inside. I opened to drawing #299 (not page #299), "It's more than possible that all sides are wrong." I knew I had to have this book. I have purchased, to date, eight copies of this book for other people. Everyone I give it to finds new things in the drawings and in the texts, and not just new, but different than what I found when I looked at the same drawings and texts. Buy this book! Not every drawing may speak to you immediately, but they likely will at some point. And when they do, they will mean something to you. And there's a good chance that what you see is altogether different from what anyone else saw. That's the genius of Paul Madonna!

I love this book! Madonna is superb illustrator with a mischievous wit and Zen spirit. A native San Franciscan, the Victorian and other architectural details of the old neighborhoods are familar to me, and it is fun to determine locations of his panels. He forces us to be aware of similar details of our lives, of the juxtapositions of form and space, and in but a few words, like a haiku, he captures relationships, moods, and the human condition. Even if you are not rooted in The City, this book deserves study, whether you are an artist or a philosopher. I look forward to a second collection, for Paul Madonna continues his work at the SF Chronicle. What joy!

I have been a big fan of Paul Madonna's exquisite drawings and thought-provoking captions since All Over Coffee debuted in the SF Chronicle. I left SF nearly 3 years ago and his strip on the web kept me connected to home. The book was very enjoyable because it documents the evolution of the strip, and has forever put to rest the question: "but what does it really mean?"Do you love San Francisco? Do you appreciate finely rendered drawings of unique architecture or everyday things most people overlook? Ever wonder how much work a working artist really does? Do you like to eavesdrop on strangers' conversations and try to put the fragments of what you hear into context? If you answered yes to any one of the above, you will enjoy "All Over Coffee."Thank you, Paul for giving your fans something tangible to linger over, with a good cup of coffee.

We have watched many of these published in the San Francisco Chronicle and I got this as an xmas gift for my hubby. He loves the sights of SF and hopefully he will enjoy them all together in one book, so he can catch the ones he may have missed.

Paul Madonna is a genius. His simple yet elegant ink wash painting are marvelous. This is my favorite book. He is truly an inspiration.

If you have read many of the Oregon Files based books by Clive Cussler, you have a feel for the general style and format that he follows. That style and format produces very entertaining stories that make the books hard to put down. Shadow Tyrants certainly delivers an entertaining story following the Cussler format. The familiar characters do their usual cliff hanger save the world thing, and keep you engaged in the process. The foundation for the story is a bit different this time around and produces some very interesting situations for the "good guys". A most enjoyable read.

Have enjoyed nearly all of Clive Cussler's books over the years, particularly the Oregon series with solid plots and clear villains. Still have many on my bookshelf. So ordered this latest novel with reasonable expectations. Unfortunately not met. The plot is oddly complicated and vague. The text is short on descriptions and far too much inane conversation. Reads like a TV drama dialogue and found myself constantly going back a few pages to figure out who was talking. Struggled with about 125 pages hoping it would get better. It did not, so gave up. Saddened to say, this is not the Cussler of old and was a waste of time and money.

I have loved all of Clive Cussler's books and always have pre-ordered them so that I can get them as soon as they are published. While I got this one early I didn't get it read as quickly as usual. Why you ask? Because frankly it was disappointing. It didn't seem to have the same Cussler pop that his novels have always had. Cabrillo's crew was again great, but the plot seemed to too slowly develop. The characters weren't as enticing as usual.The main plot is that a group of "Nine" scholars have found a way to disrupt every computer in the world at one time. They would disable them so that they wouldn't never function again. The goal would be to "Thin the Herd" of humanity. They feel that 1/3rd of all people would die from starvation and lack of health care. But the rest would again learn how to deal with life in a more simple humn way.It is a good plot. It could be so developed that it is awesome. But frankly I thought it fell flat.I'll still by the next Clive Cussler book, but I will be a bit more reluctant to jump right on it. Thus it is a sad day for my love of Clive Cussler novels. As with many others I feel that Cussler had little to do with the writing of this novel and thus the reason for the flatness.

Another great story. I personally have a hard time putting down books written by Clive Cussler,I know that he's written several books with co authors, including this book. But the excellent writing does not stop.As I said I had a hard time putting this book down.Great story well written and it does provide the reader with some things to think about regarding the future.Excellent reading.money well spent.The bad news is that now we have to wait for the next book to come.out.☺

I suspect that Clive Cussler like James Patterson hasn't written anything with his name on it for some time. Even so, I find the Oregon Files very entertaining. It's a Cussler formula but with a better story and better writing. This book is done very well with a nice cast of rogue characters that are just fun to read no matter how implausable the story

As with earlier entrants in the Oregon Files series you've got lots of action, adventure and detail. You don't have to start with the first book in the series either…each new book gives the basic details (such as a description of the ship "Oregon") over again. A review of the crew history is also going to be done too. Seems like there's always some scheme going and a "bad guy" to defeat. There's always a few vague references to past books too (too bad there never seems to be any clear identification of which book it is so the new reader will know which other book to read).One group of villains this time around with two competing threats, one of them a super computer ( The Jungle had an electronic/optical computer, Shadow Tyrants has a bio- based computer). It's no surprise that Cabrillo and the Oregon save the day.I liked Typhoon Fury better I think but Shadow Tyrants is a pretty good book to spend time reading and keeping it around to read again. The Oregon Files series is one of the better Cussler labeled series, the Clive/Dirk books maybe as good.This book is worth having.

Another novel which describes how computers become alive through Artificial intelligence wherein the first action performed is self preservation. Such a frightening yet real possibility. The premise is extremely believable, yet the possibility of wealthy nine ancestors keeping the nine scrolls of mankind is farfetched. Back to the book. A typical exciting Cussler book, which is difficult to put down. It has all the elements of a Clive Cussler novel. History in relation to present day. Many incredible tools possessed by the OREGON. Saving the world, yet not from a megalomaniac. An interesting twist; the OREGON has two factions attempting to save the world. One faction is generally good and one faction generally evil. These factions clash resulting in an interesting sub plot. Not something I 've come across a lot in Cussler's novels. I always enjoy Clive Cussler novels, especially the OREGON files and NUMA files with Kurt Austin. If you love Cussler novels this is one of the best. If you are new to Cussler novels, this one will cause you to want more. A great escape read, a great novel!.

5 stars . It was suspenseful , well written , sprinkled with technical , and engineering tidbits. Sure , a little far fetched , but a good story none the less.Who else spins such tales with twists and turns, yet the hero's save the day.
