As I progress through life, and accept that I'm not young any more, I also realize that the younger generations do not ingest books the way I do. If you look at the reviews for this book, especially at the 1 and 2 star ratings, you'll find a deplorable pattern. "It was too slow." No, you're not considering what you're reading. "The author is a racist." Definitely no, he's almost drawing a caricature of them to shine a great big spotlight on facism and bigotry in order to persuade the audience of just how evil these things are. "The ending was too abrupt." or "He obviously meant to write a sequel." No and no. After many thousands of words placed in thought provoking ways, the author challenges the audience to decide what the story means. And gives us license to pick the ending that we think fits the best.This story was written in the 60s, and is set then as well. What if the Axis won World War II is the major premise behind the setting. The conflicts highlight the extreme to which Japanese and German cultures could have gone, and the possible effects of living in a land under the control of one, and strongly influenced by the other. Imagine the Japanese concept of place, mixing with facist bigotry, overlaid on oppressed Americans living in a totalitarian world. PKD thoroughly denounces facism, bigotry and xenophobia.But the story is more than that. The plot is hidden from the reader as we see events from several points of view. And the narration ends with barely a paragraph of denouement. If you are not driven to contemplation about the meaning of life or the nature of reality by this work, you should read it again, slowly.

I was putting off buying this due to it having reviews like "confusing ending" however when watched the series on Amazon I was amazed and stunned at the same time. And i figured with all books and movies/tv adaptations the book is always better.We always see the commercials on tv for the what 'ifs' about history what if the Nazis won the war whats if World War II ended entirely different. We don't know for sure how this would actually have turned out but PKD offers some amazing insight to what it would have been like.Each character has there own unique persona and unique motives for what they are really out to get. Every character is masterfully developed. PKD doesn't just focus on the character's PKD is able to fully capture you imagination and create a beautifully horrid reality inside your mind as you read.This is one of the books that you will read reread and still be wondering about what truly happened or what the book was really about. One of the most complex and inciting books I have read and loved so deeply in a long time. Overall if you like alternative-history or books with complex backgrounds and amazing story's you should be sure to read this.

One of the greatest novels of th 20th century. I've been a PKD fan since the early 1980's, obsessively collecting his work, most of which at the time was out of print. It's safe to say that no person did more to shape my intellectual development as a teenager than Philip K. Dick. I am forever in his debt.That said, TMitHC is a treasure. It distills a number of Dick's obsessions into a taut character study set against the backdrop of a world going even more mad. Each of the 6 'protagonists' here are searching for truth. Only a couple of them are capable of facing it dignity.As with all of Dick's best work the world-building is efficient and brilliant. I re-read this recently to prepare myself for watching the new serial, and was reminded of just how good Dick's prose is. The casual racism of Mr. Childan, the inner strength of Juliana, the coldness of Joe Cinnadella. But, it is Mr. Tagomi who owns this novel. He is one of Dick's finest characters, at once pragmatic and idealistic. Mature and naive. The living embodiment of the Tao.The ending matters both textually and thematically. Dianne Lake was 14 when she joined Charles Manson's Family. She was there because her mixed up parents decided they didn't have to take care of her anymore. That's why I say she's a victim.You want to reach through the book and shake her mom and dad until their teeth rattle. What in hell were they thinking?!But ultimately she's a victor. She got mental health help, testified against the murdering Charlie and his Family. She got an education, married happily, had kids, and created her own--real--family.Her feelings and adult analysis of how Charlie manipulated people are really interesting. As she looks back, she connects the dots. What she just accepted as Charlie's fiats back then, she now realizes were part of his plan for control and success. The specifics of how he got the Family and outsiders to do his bidding is fascinating.The book is well written and talks about aspects of Manson and his crew that other books don't cover. Whether you're interested in Manson, true crime, or biographies of people who successfully overcome the odds, it's a great read.

Overall this is probably the best memoir written by any of the former members of the Manson Family (Susan Atkins wrote a bunch, but they all feel like attempts to excuse herself, as does Tex Watkins's book). To her credit Lake admits at the beginning that many of these events took place 50 years ago and there are simply things she cannot remember, and that she is presenting things from her perspective. The only reason I'm giving this four stars instead of five is because it feels as if there is a crucial chapter missing between when she testifies against Manson et all in the first trial and the epilogue. I found myself wondering if anyone from the Family ever tried to contact her after 1978 (she mentions one pseudo-reporter finding her), and what her thoughts about these people -- in particular the girls whom she refers to at one point as her friends, lovers, and family -- after all of these years. I understand why she may not have wanted to write more about her husband and children, but -- particularly since the parole board recently voted to grant Leslie Van Houtten (whom Lake doesn't seem to have had liked much) parole -- I felt this was really needed. One (probably unintended) audience I think this book might resonate with would be girls in the 14-16 age range who might be struggling to connect with their family.

I don't want this book to end. Fascinating. I was a pseudo-hippie in the 70's - I remember this all. The author has written an interesting birds eye view of what it was like living with Charles Manson. I often thought briefly of heading toward a racier life than I actually did - so glad I did not. I chose working for a living in corporate America; I could have landed in a similar situation with the wrong guidance. Thank God Dianne you made it out in one piece. Your book is the kind of book I save for vacations in the islands or a long plane trip! I'm getting toward the end of the book - too bad. Good books like this are hard to find.

My interest in this book stems from my readings of Alice Miller’s early work and like many people, I’ve read "Helter Skelter". The curiosity of how a ‘Charles Manson’ could be created and how he could get so many followers has been an ongoing question since those horrible murders 50 years ago. Having viewed the PBS, “Summer of Love” documentary and seeing Netflix’s, “Mindhunter”, (which is a great book also), one significant key lies within this highly introspective account.In the PBS show, one point made is that the Haight-Ashbury District was teeming with young kids on their own. In light of current sex abuse scandals & the high incidence of pedophilia, I wondered how many of those vulnerable kids were escaping molesting environments and dysfunctional homes. Turns out my suspicions were correct with this history; Dianne Lane provides a very personal recollection of being a 14 year-old in 1967, in the LA and San Francisco area. Dianne’s heartbreaking family experience and her courageous portrayal sheds light on how kids need safe structure in their lives. Neither she or Manson had healthy upbringings and they intertwined in a perfect storm of deadly chaos. (At the very least known, Manson was burdened with abandonment, uprooting and deep shame at age 4 or 5 with his teenage mother’s imprisonment. He was sent into the Catholic school system thereafter.)Dianne is the narrator of her own account and she has a pleasing voice; she speaks clearly and the book is written with great focus and care. She shares the thoughts of a normal, young teen trying to navigate life with normal, early teenage drives and needs. Unfortunately, she was let down by the adults who surrounded her. I hope the insight in these books & programs available to the public, along with the daily increasing voices of women & men who’ve survived sexual abuse will make great change in how children are treated. We need to make less predators and we need to make less vulnerable kids. I believe it takes great courage to expose a personal history like this; I hope it makes a lasting imprint into our culture. I highly recommend this book to all parents, all adults and all abuse survivors. I deeply thank Dianne Lane for sharing her life.

tl;drI'm giving this 5 stars for the content in consideration of the authors.As for the Kindle format and O'Reilly's decision to not sell PDFs ZERO stars.Long story: I need to learn C# so decided this book would be good. Upon heading over to O'Reilly I discovered the uproar over their decision a few months ago to stop selling PDFs. WOW! - I some response to the uproar about them looking into providing PDFs as part of their Safari Subscription service - but as I couldn't find a link to purchase the PDF and I'm not interested in a $400 subscription I decided to try the Kindle version.I've got at least a hundred Kindle books in my library - all non-technical book - e.g. novels, non-fiction etc. I love the Kindle platform. But as I have discovered it has problems with technical books. The first problem is that it does not allow you to scroll pages. As a programmer you often need to see ON ONE SCREEN a section of code. Unfortunately, with Kindle (I'm using kindle on a mac) you can only see page n or page n+1. You cannot view the bottom half of page n and the top half of page n+1. For a general reading book this is not a problem. For studying code or long tables it is frustrating.Second problem is with cut and paste. Programmers often read parts of technical books and then copy some section of the code from the book and then paste it into their development environment (e.g vi / Vistual Studio / whatever). (also notice the extra space character added before Foo - "Foo" vs " Foo" - while not a syntax error this could introduce a logic error - even worse and harder to debug than a syntax error)In conclusion, in my opinion, the Kindle format (at least as produced by O'Relly ?) is not a substitute for the PDF format for technical books.

This is a fantastic book, whether you're new to C# or are an experienced C# developer who wants to deepen your knowledge and understanding of the language and its core libraries. (Note that this book does assume a certain level of general programming experience). The writing style is clear, concise, and logical. The authors do a great job of illustrating each concept with relevant code snippets and examples. LINQPad, the freemium utility developed by the authors, is a very useful companion to the book (and is also quite impressive as a software achievement). For those who commented that the price of this edition is more expensive than previous editions, it's worth noting that this book clocks in at 1,035 pages. Hats off to the Albaharis for producing a phenomenal work of depth and breadth.

I was really enjoying this book, getting back up to speed on C# after 12 years, but every time I tried navigating with bookmarks or highlights my Kindle reader would freeze, then crash. Granted, my Kindle is a Fire, which is horrendously slow, but no other Kindle books I've read on it (MANY) have had any issues whatsoever. Amazon was kind enough to give me a refund (removing it from my library).==========Edit: So I purchased the print version for twice the price, I'm sure it will be worth it ;-)

I think I was 17 when I first read The Red Badge of Courage. It was a freshman literature class in college and it was in the summer term.It's a short book and because I was young, I just wanted to get to the end to know what happened. The one thing I learned through reading this short novel and in the professor's discussion after, is that one cannot tear into a great book of literature the way one reads through a best seller (finishing it in one night, reading it by the glow of a flashlight under the covers). It is not formulaic.A classic work of fiction such as The Red Badge of Courage, takes many readings before you can say that you have truly read it and enjoyed it. Like a gourmet meal, you need to digest this book mindfully, reading slowly and noting the richness of its imagery and the life-likeness of the description. It is verisimilitude at its finest -- but as tight as prose can be. Sparse and yet rich, layered and textured in imagery and language.It's the story of a boy who went off and joined the Civil War without knowing that he signed on for a voyage of self-discovery and a coming to his own. He will know himself far deeper than it was comfortable for him to know himself but in the end, because he became acquainted with himself, the vastness of his potential for bravery and cowardice, he comes out a "hero" -- one who went to fight and fought valiantly despite his fear. It is a retelling of the hero's journey and it never grow old or cliché.Of course, in the end, you will come to believe that war is not a good thing even if you manage to survive it.Do you know someone who is thinking of joining the military or the armed forces? They would benefit from a reading of this book. They will at least sign up having an inkling of what could happen to them.Happy reading!

This is the second time that I’ve read this book. The first time was when I was a child, maybe 10 years old. The Vietnam War was raging, and the tale of a young man, barely old enough to serve his country, yet volunteering for service in our own country’s Civil War, left a lasting impression on me. The events in this book, while having taken place a hundred or so years earlier, still was relevant. A youth struggling with his fears, first running from battle, then actually relishing it in almost a maniacal way, led me to the understanding that war was the same no matter what the setting or century. The terrors, the fears, the coming of age in a young infantryman; all these things remain the same today as they did fifty years ago or a hundred and fifty. I have never been a soldier, and neither was the author. But yet he places you there, on the battlefield, in the encampment, in a place far from home and family. Any lover of historical fiction will find this book compelling, even riveting; a timeless novel.

I finally read this classic and was immediately swept away by the tale of young Henry Fleming (often referred to as ‘the youth’ in Red Badge of Courage), who itches to go to war, despite his mother’s wishes.Stephen Crane’s writing has aged gracefully since the novel was first published in 1893. The forbidding atmosphere of war is ideally suited to a style that might be considered florid by today’s standards. The potent tone fits the story but the writing feels strangely modern, authentic and devoid of sentimentality.Henry’s character is laid bare as he experiences both cowardice and bravery in battle. Both emotions are seen as almost uncontrollable responses in times of war and the author doesn’t pass judgment, letting subtle ironies prevail instead. Red Badge of Courage is as much a psychological novel as a war story. And faced with what Henry and many of his comrades confronted, the reader might well have turned and headed for the trees as well.Images of war are lightly rendered in comparison to modern novels but just as jarring. In one scene the wounded trudge to their impending deaths (as anyone injured in battle during the Civil War frequently had mere hours to live), and young Henry describes a soldier he encounters who has two wounds, ‘one in the head, bound with a blood-soaked rag, and the other in the arm, making that member dangle like a broken bough.’Hemingway said that Red Badge of Courage was ‘one of the finest books of American literature.’ Reading Crane’s prose, it’s easy to see precursors of Hemingway’s own style:‘It rained. The procession of weary soldiers became a bedraggled train, despondent and muttering, marching with churning effort in a trough of liquid brown mud under a low, wretched sky.’Stephen Crane modestly stated that he wanted to write a war story reminiscent of the books he read as a boy, and ended up penning an adventure story that doubles as fine literature and perhaps the ultimate anti-war novel.

This is a classic I missed in my youth that I am glad I finally read. This intimate view of war is a sobering account of the atrocity of war that humans inflict upon each other, beginning with a gleeful, manly call to arms! The reader follows the young farm boy, who follows the call of noble warfare, the image of noble heroes in his mind, off to conquer the villainous enemy. And we go with him, on the march, in camp and onto the battlefield, battling with him, not only the physical threat, but also the psychological one, to a point, where all the questions of war seem to echo our own concerns. It is a great book, for those who have imagined the horror and glory of war, but more so, for those who have not pondered such, a chance to open, fully as a human being in armed conflict.

Lee Strobel, Rob Suggs, and Robert Elmer set off on a journey to help kids discover the answers to these questions in their book CASE FOR A CREATOR FOR KIDS.This book is laid out similarly to the other titles in the CASE FOR KIDS series, CASE FOR FAITH FOR KIDS, CASE FOR CHRIST FOR KIDS, and CASE FOR GRACE FOR KIDS. Each chapter tackles a big picture question, using research, interviews with scholars and theologians, and logical arguments to answer some of the toughest questions kids face.Four main categories are explored here:- Cosmology, the study of how the universe was formed.- Physics, how things in the world work.- Astronomy, the study of things outside our planet.- DNA, the instruction manual for building proteins.In each category, Strobel takes time to ask some difficult questions that any kid who has been in a science class or watched any amount of Discovery channel may have come across: How did the universe begin? What are the odds that the universe simply came to be by chance? The arguments provided here are pretty straightforward for the 3rd - 5th grade age range, and will definitely spur on further conversation. Questions, definitions of terms, and further commentaries are set aside in helpful side bubbles that help to clarify main points.In the last section of the book, a collection of four stories relating to the main points discussed earlier in the book are included. These stories sometimes are hard to follow and very loosely introduce each topic to the reader. They would almost work better as a devotional before reading the chapter relating to the information mentioned briefly in the story. Questions and facts follow each short story and can provide some discussion points.CASE FOR A CREATOR FOR KIDS is probably one of the most succinct and easy to read / comprehend books on the topic of what really amounts to an argument for Intelligent Design. Interestingly, this book does not really tackle the topic of evolution. In fact, evolution is not even mentioned aside from a brief aside in one of the stories at the back end of the book. Strobel doesn't take time to argue specifically Creation vs. Evolution, but instead focuses on the origin of the universe -- either by chance or by design.This is another must have for any family with kids asking tough questions about what they're learning at school or church about the creation of the world.

My 8 year old son recently began asking questions about God...then when we'd answer he began to have doubts. We are a Christian family and have raised him in the faith. He not only goes to a Christian school but we as a family really work with him daily in regards to his faith and ours. When he began to have doubts I was a little concerned. This book really turned him around by offering science and logic as explanations that there is a God. It was a book we walked through with him and explained things he had questions about. Overall he loved it, we loved it and while there's so many mysteries surrounding our creation this was a fantastic book for a kid who asks hard but really good questions about God.

I think this book works best if you (as the parent/teacher) have read his adult copy OR if you have a strong foundation in some of these sciences. While the book is child friendly, the concepts are kind of deep. Definitely a great conversation starter, but be prepared to dive deeper as you explore the topics he covers. I love Lee Strobel and these books.

This book is a good starter book for explaining creation science to kids. We read this book together. I would suggest this book for kids age 10 - 12.

Great for teaching kids biblical world viewI would definitely recommend the Case for Christ, Case for Faith, and Case for the Creator FOR KIDS! I got this series for my 9 year old son to help me with teaching him a biblical world view. Our public school system and media is so full of contradictory information, I want my son to rest firmly on the TRUTH! So I decided to find something he could read that would be on his level… We have started A Case for Christ together and he really seems to be enjoying it.If you are looking for other items to teach biblical world view, I also recommend The Answers Book For Kids Vol 1, 2 ,3, and 4. which has answers to 88 of their most difficult questions regarding the Bible, God, sin, dinosaurs, the Flood of Noah, salvation, and more!

I bought this for my nephews, but I read it first. It's a great, simplistic way to explain creation by a creator. It all boils down to this...1) You put your faith in the extremely unlikley odds it took for the earth to be inhabitable or...2) You put your faith in God and in His Word that he created it and it didn't happen by chance.

Great book for faith-based questions for kids. When I was little, we were afraid to ask all the hard questions but this opens up the conversation while they are young. The sooner the questions get answered, the more solid their faith will be as they age. I highly recommend all of this series for kids. It would probably even be good for adults that are not very well versed in theology and would like just simple answers to deep questions of faith.

In school they were presenting theories of creation that were be presented as truth. We bought this book to go through with our daughter and it's perfect. It talks about how your teacher may tell you one thing and your church might tell you another thing and how you can figure out what is the truth.
