The author is very good at his art. The books are well written, the characters well developed, the story is compelling and I was very entertained and am looking forward to reading from this author again and again. He mixes humor, wit and a minor bit of soap boxing on today's societal ills that I found refreshing.

This is standard post-apocalypse stuff. Nothing funny here, Not even attempts at being funny. If you're looking for humor, you won't find it here.

I really enjoyed the style of these books. It was a unique take on an apocalyptic world and didn’t take itself overly serious which made it a fun enjoyable story for me. Some bits had me laughing out loud. The ending was a bit abrupt for my taste and I really wish for more on that front but over-all I would and have recommended it to others.

Wonderful characters and unexpected twists. These are easy to read and almost no typos (maybe two in the first three books) maintains the spell of the tale. They are not simple, though, which is why I bought the fourth book.

A good quick, easy, funny summer read! A novel look at the end of the world as we know it...and new order to how things might run.

not the most riveting story but it is ok for a time waster. had a good plot but it tended to drag on in some areas.

These were fun reads. I only hope that there are more in the pipeline.

Take all of today's insanity, crank it to 11, then drop bombs on it. Great world building, memorable characters and clever witty writing. Best read I've had this year.

I heard about this book on the My Favorite Murder podcast.I've only just started this book, but I've lost a couple of pounds already. It's getting easier, not harder as I go along. I kinda want to recommend it to everyone I know. You need a scale to weigh your food. But that's kinda fun. It's like chemistry class.

Were you ever at a doctor's appointment where they told you you were too heavy and needed to lose weight, then just got up and walked out? Can you imagine a doctor telling a patient they have cancer or heart disease, then just walking out of the exam room without giving them some sort of guidance or treatment? At 400 pounds, it happened to me many times, and from others I have talked to, it happens often. The Diet Fix has the information those doctors should be telling their patients. This book is some of the best money I have ever spent. I weighed 400 pounds for much of my adult life. After reading the book and starting to follow it, I lost nine pounds by the time I started Weight Watchers about a week later. It's been over a year and I am down over 130 pounds, and many, many clothes sizes (size 56 pants to presently size 40). By now, everyone knows that to lose weight you have to expend more calories than you take in. Easy in theory, but not so easy in practice! The Diet Fix tells you how to do it, then how to keep it off. It tells you how to do it in a realistic DOABLE fashion. It teaches you what people who were successful did, and how to do those things. It tells you how to lose weight in a healthy way. There is nothing Freedhoff recommends that your doctor would be concerned about. It makes healthy living a lifestyle you want to do so that it lasts a lifetime. It gives you realistic expectations of your weightloss so that you understand what is going on. It helps you to understand the changes you are making both physically and emotionally. Although I am also going to Weight Watchers, I credit this book mostly for my weight loss, as it has helped me to tweek their program. I never could have been as successful as I've been without this book. Most importantly, you are not going to starve while you are losing weight. You are not going to deprive yourself, but you will learn how to get control and stay in control. The amazing thing about weight loss is that what you have to push yourself to do at the start, like tracking everything (with smartphone apps, not difficult or time consuming), becomes things you want to do because you want the benefits it rewards you with. Presently, I'm at 259 lbs, continuing to lose a few more pounds, wearing sizes I wore in college, and enjoying life more than I have in a long time. Thanks Dr. Freedhoff!

I think the best part about this book is how it stresses that in order for any "diet" or new eating plan to be successful long-term, it has to be enjoyable, it has to be sustainable. Anyone can suffer for 6 months and lose a lot of weight, only to gain it all back when the program they chose just isn't sustainable anymore. Willpower runs out when suffering is involved, that's just a fact of life. The same goes for exercise. He said you must *enjoy* the exercise that you choose and be able to do it consistently over the years.That said, I'm not into the calorie-counting thing. For me, *that's* not sustainable and that's where this book loses a star. Maybe for a short while in order to get a clear-eyed picture of how many calories you're eating everyday, but a lifetime of calculating and recording calories??? I'd rather use the portion-control method of using your fists to determine how much you should be eating at a meal (one fist-sized portion of veggies and one half-and-half fist-sized portion of protein and carbs). The calorie-counting is a deal breaker for me in terms of following his methods to the letter.There are many good tidbits throughout the book, though, that make it worth reading and/or skimming through. For example, he believes that you're setting yourself up for failure if you allow yourself to get too hungry at any point during the day, so you should plan snacks into your day so that you don't become so ravenous that you end up inhaling your daily calories all in one sitting. He also advocates for eating before an event, again, so that you don't overindulge in rich party food. He believes that people should be cooking and eating most of their meals at home to avoid highly caloric and overly-seasoned (with fat and sugar) restaurant food.He also does a good job spelling out the variety of ways in which dieting can be traumatic to people. Trauma does not equal long-term results, quite the opposite. He's very much oriented towards "slow and steady wins the race." Nothing that he recommends is a quick fix. His plan for lifelong weight loss requires time, planning, and mindfulness (as it should). He's more interested in how people keep the weight off than in how they lose the weight, and for good reason. Keeping it off is oftentimes harder than losing it, and most diet books don't talk about that.

This book is filled with boring, tired advice that either makes no sense or directly contradicts the most recent advances in nutrition science. A lot of it sounds suspiciously like the diets (and diet diaries) I used when I was in my twenties (40 years ago). Forcing yourself to eat when you're not hungry?!?! That is beyond ridiculous. What a waste of time and money.

This book is just phenomenal. It all makes so much sense. I have been able to maintain a 50lbs+ loss (via calorie counting and MyFitnessPal) and decided to read this book based on it being so popular with MFP users. I agree with others that the voice actor for this is difficult to listen to for this material (there are multiple voice actors, but I couldn't get past the first one). I feel that reading poe warrants a more passionate reading.. Rises and falls and almost every poem and story needs a fevered feeling pulse to it.

The readers did a great job. My only problem with this is that each chapter is just "chapter 1" and so on. If you want a specific one, you have to go through all of them until you find the one you want.

I haven't paid for a copy of this Audible Book. I am a Poe fan! But the narrator of this one is just not appropriate for this material. Maybe children's books..? His voice sounds like a teenager reading homework; not expressing a thoughtful, emotional dynamic story. I won't buy it. I own other Poe audio books - none are read like this kid.

I bought this book hoping for route information on Maine canoe waters that aren't whitewater runs. I have the AMC Maine River Guide, but whitewater runs are not our interest (we're experienced, but mid-60's). There are so many lakes and streams in Maine - there must be hundreds of canoe routes that are available, if you just know the put-ins and generally what to expect, and, where you can and can't camp.The introduction to this book states the authors' ambivalence towards sharing their knowlege about canoe routes under the heading 'Do We Really Want to Tell People about the Best Places?' This is odd and inappropriate for a supposed guide-book, and sets the tone for what follows, much of which is an overworked emphasis on plants and animals and how delicate they are. For an audience that is already interested enough in canoeing to buy the book, there should not be a need to lecture on how 'even low-impact uses such as canoeing ... can substantially affect fragile marsh habitat'. A) I doubt it B) I really doubt it C) you don't need to tell me.The waters selected may for the most part be interesting if you happen to already be in the area, but, because the selected waters are so small, almost none of them would be considered worth driving more than an hour to get to - certainly not the 5-7 hours from our home in Vt. Of the 20 water bodies listed for Western and 'Midcoast' Maine, from the New Hampshire border to Bangor, south of Rte 2, none are larger than 1 1/2 miles with one exception - aren't there possibly some stretches of suitable river or something else of interest in this area? Water bodies I know are not rendered completely accurately - the map in the book of a pond I know shows a picnic table on what is actually private land.I'm still at the point where I will study my DeLorme Atlas for likely looking places and proceed from there. The authors could have spent less time trying to make the reader excited about seeing more marshes and more pine trees. I like marshes and trees as much as the next person, but what I want really to know is are there campsites? what are the rules? can this be a multi-day trip? where can I park my car safely? And, I want an author who knows why they are writing a guidebook and not suffering from self-doubt.

There are more places to canoe & kayak in Maine than you can shake a paddle at, and the possibilities and choices can be overwhelming. This is a great book to start out with. Whitewater paddlers need not apply unless they are looking for a change of pace. This book is well suited to beginners and experienced paddlers alike as well as solo paddlers and those paddling with kids & dogs. Nicely detailed and well written. While I can plop my canoe into any one of the lakes and ponds in my area, it's nice to read about some places I've never considered (or even heard about). Variety is the spice of life. So far I've put in at five of the recommended ponds in this book and I have been pleasantly surprised each time. Highly recommended if you are a quiet water paddler looking for a new place to dip your paddle in Maine.

Great guide for day trips. Good details and numerous trips to choose from. I was hoping for more overnight trips ... but perhaps that will come in a later book.

An insider's perspective, it is helping us understand the various regions and identify areas and lakes that we will find appealing and within our time frame and ability levels. Two thumbs up!

WE have the New England series of the Quite Water books. All the books have good directions, descriptions of paddling locations, and description of wildlife and plants. These books have greatly expanded our kayaking adventures.

I like these books but do not find the directions great but otherwise these are very helpful.

First, there seems to be some confusion about the release dates of this book. I have it on Kindle (October, 2018) so no worries there. Perhaps I ought to have waited for the hardback to join all the other C.J. Sansoms on my shelves - because this is a keeper!Set in 1549, when Henry VIII's young son, Edward, has inherited his father's throne, it deals with an uprising against Edward's guardian, the Lord Protector Somerset. The rebellion is led by two brothers from Norfolk called Kett and the story centres on the city of Norwich, which at that time was England's second biggest.As with all of Sansom's Tudor novels it 'stars' the hunchback lawyer, Matthew Shardlake, and his sidekick, Jack Barak. They're sent by Edward's older step-sister, the Lady Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth I) to investigate a gruesome murder near Norwich when Kett's Rebelion erupts.In short, of all the Shardlake novels, I think this is Sansom's finest creation. I studied Tudor history at a school founded and named after Edward VI, just across the road from where Sansom himself studied at Birmingham University, but had no inkling of the extent of the rebellions of 1549. (We were founded in 1552.)But, more important, Shardlake as a character continues to develop and the plotting is truly excellent. It's a great yarn filled with superb historical insights and detail. Highly recommended. (And with a very intelligent, learned, yet easily readable coda reviewing the historical sources with Sansom's own well-informed comments.) Oh - did I say Highly recommended?

I'm not going to lie. This was a monster of a book even for me. A tomb of a read ironically at over 840 pages. But do you know what? It's CJ Sansom and the time passed quickly as I was sucked into a medieval world of intrigue and murder.There’s a lot to enjoy here, and not just with the plot. Around you as you read, there are battles, conspiracies and talk of royal intrigue. Shardlake has a murder to solve and then another body turns up...The rebellions of 1549 during the reign of Edward VI are what drives the novel and the events of Tombland in historical Norwich. I had no idea this was a real place but I’ve worn out Google Maps finding out as much as I can about it. I know it so well now - well the 1549 version. How exciting it will be to see the modern day version and Sansom’s version at the same time.There’s a keen sense of chaos in the novel but when you have a king who is only eleven years old...the country is in turmoil and there is religious turmoil as well. No one seems safe. Even everyday life is getting harder as the financial state of the country is in free fall. You get a keen sense of all of this in the novel and it’s like wandering down the streets yourself, the sights, sounds and godforsaken smells all the more real as you walk on.Shardlake works as a lawyer for Henry’s VIII’s daughter Elizabeth and the Boleyn name comes back into play when a distant relative from Norfolk is found murdered. Of course, Shardlake is the man for the job, but this is unlike anything he has been asked to do before.It’s a very visual novel - from the chaotic market scenes to the cumbersome journeys the characters have to undertake to get to Tombland, the inns they stop at on the way and the cells of Norwich castle....it’s a world of medieval wonder and mixes historical fact, peasant revolt and the true meaning of loyalty.And within all of this, a strong plot worthy of the Shardlake name. Read it slowly, take it in and allow yourself to be submerged into a historically fascinating world.

Our protagonist has survived being on the nose in the court of Henry VIII and is now living through the reigns of Henk's children. CJ Sansom continues to find little-known episodes in Tudor history to both delight and enlighten readers and Shardlake continues to be a sympathetic voice in an era of almost unremitting horrors.

Another gripping and convincing historical novel that I could not bear to put down. I can hardly wait for the next one.

A master story teller and another great adventure with M. Shardlake. I cannot put this one down, every page a winner. Revelation, Sovereign, Dark Fire, Dissolution, Heartstone and Lamentation were all so exciting and marvelous in the extreme. Sansom captures you from the very start of each brilliant book and takes you through the Tudor times like never before then grips you into a masterclass world of suspense. Also told with a great sense of humor with the occasional social commentary that only a true master of literature can perform. Thank you C.J.
