I write in support of Rescue At Los Banos. It is an interesting story on a number of levels. First, it shows again how War brings out both the humanity and inhumanity in those in the middle of the maelstrom of conflict. Second, it is a book that honors the work of the military, in particular the 11th Air Borne, paratroopers , Army Air Force pilots, and Phillipine Guerrillas. Third it tells the story of the civilan internees and the hardships they faced and the bravery and perserverence they showed. This includes the role of the women of the camp Navy Nurses, mothers, and wives. The book gives a well written account of a heroic coordinated rescue from the individuals that were there. It tells the story of the War in the Phillipines, which has not received the historic attention that is deserved.For the reader that seeks to understand the background leading to the civilian Philippine internment camps, this is provided through the experiences of the author's selected participants.I write this from the perspective of someone that has spent significant time the last few years reading and writing (The Bill Foye Story) about the greater WW 2 Los Banos area. This included direct reading of Guerrilla reports. The PQOG Guerrilla unit along with the people of Los Banos saved one particular Navy pilot in October 1944. William Foye, my father, bailed out about a mile from the Los Banos Camp. This lead to his rescue in February 1945, thanks to the help of C-47 pilots, supplying the 11th Air Borne, that saw the mirror signal and the next day a PBY rescue. The Henderson book overlaps some situations laid out in the book.Finally, my mother was a Navy Nurse and would be proud of the role they played and that the Nurses and other women have their story told.Given all this, it is a good read!Richard Foye

What an AMAZING account of so many strong and courageous people. I knew very little about what went on in the Pacific theater of WW2. Most of my knowledge was filled with accounts of the European countries where my Dad had fought. I now know there were thousands of regular American citizens that suffered terribly at the hands of a savage Japanese army in the Philipines. What an eye opener this book was to me. The author tells this true story through the eyes of several people who lived through it. I know there were probably hundreds of prisoner accounts he could have chronicled but to follow so closely the people he chose gave me an understanding what it was like emotionally to be in that camp. He also gives great details of a very well planned rescue mission by our military. Truly a GREAT read!

During the early days of the Pacific War, the Japanese captured many American civilian workers. These people had been employed as nurses or with the Pan American Clipper seaplane service, among other positions. Now, with Manila in the hands of the Japanese, these civilians were rounded up and placed in camps. For the next 3-plus years, these civilian workers would face the wrath of the Japanese.Civilians were supposed to be protected prisoners under the international rules of war, but this meant little to the Japanese. In places such as Cabanatuan and other camps throughout the Philippines, the Japanese began a plan of starvation and intimidation upon the prisoners. The American civilians interred at Los Banos faced similar repercussions, not to mention that the population at Los Banos also included women and children.General Douglas MacArthur personally authorized a rescue mission to be carried out by the 11th Airborne division to free the prisoners held in Los Banos. These men, with the aid of Filipino guerrillas, launched a three-pronged attack from air, land, and sea. They succeeded in freeing over two thousand civilians.I found "Rescue At Los Banos" to be an informative and interesting book. I've read books about the raid on Cabanatuan, so I was somewhat familiar with this topic before. However, I was unaware that Los Banos contained civilian POWs. I was shocked at the conditions these men, women, and children were forced to live under. If not for the 11th's attack, many of these people would have starved to death or been killed outright by the Japanese.I give this book a high recommendation. General Colin Powell has referenced the rescue at Los Banos as a perfect attack. Author Bruce Henderson brings that attack to life.

So far in 2017, I’ve read over 15 non-fiction and fiction books. I haven’t given out too many FIVE STARS, but RESCUE AT LOS BANOS by Bruce Henderson is very worthy of FIVE STARS.From the opening page to end, RESCUE AT LOS BANOS had me enthralled. It was so well written and researched. At first, I thought it would only be about the actual rescue, but instead the book gives readers the individual stories before, during, and after the war of the POWs / internees, the military men who conducted the rescue, and the Filipino guerrillas. It also gives a good, but limited insight, into the preparation and the actual land battles to liberate the Philippines. It does, however, give a very good insight into the preparation and the rescue at Los Banos.In addition to revealing what happened to the “good guys” after the war, Bruce Henderson also revealed what happened to the Japanese military officers who guarded the POWs / internees. I thought that this was interesting since my dad was captured on Wake Island and held by the Japanese in prison camps in China and Japan. My dad never talked about his POW experience to anyone. After he died in the 1980’s, the internet allowed me to learn more about his experience. The one constant between what happened at Los Banos and my dad’s POW experience is that the prison camps were run by cruel sadist. In my dad’s experience, the Japanese prison camp commandant committed suicide and his successor, a Sgt. Major, was arrested for war crimes by the Japanese Military Police and turned over to US forces. One wonders if being a cruel sadist was a requirement to be given a duty assignment to a POW camp,

I'm a fan of both Graphic Novels, and Brandon Sanderson. That being said, I was a little underwhelmed on this one. Not bad, but not great.THE GOOD:*Physical aspects: the book itself is well made. The pages are glossy, the print quality excellent, & the dust cover is pretty.*Art: it's solid. Not the best but far better than average. The art has a busy quality to it, with lots of pencil shading that makes it look a bit murky, rather than a clean contemporary comic book style. Not bad mind you, just a little busy.*Cheap: a hardback graphic novel for around $15? That's a deal.THE OK: (nitpicky stuff)*Exposition: a problem with graphic novels is the over reliance of exposition. In this instance, there are lots of "info dumps" via characters talking to each other, but actually explaining the plot to the reader. I prefer a "narrator approach" to this sort of thing, because I think it's out of character for two characters to be talking to each other about things they clearly already know. It's nitpicky, I know, but if you look at some of the most skilled comics writers, you'll see very little of this. For instance, Geoff Johns often employs a "narrator" to fill in the reader, often just the character thinking to himself, which feels more natural than exposition. There is no avoiding at least a little bit of exposition, but this was a little heavier than I prefer.*Characters development: The main character is pretty well developed, but Khriss, the "mysterious Darksider who hides secrets of her own" felt like she was kind of cardboard. I have faith this will improve in future volumes.*Magic system: the sand mastery thing does not feel well fleshed out to me, which is surprising for a Sanderson novel. He's known for great magic systems. I suspect the art is where there is an issue communicating the intent, because the sand magic is mostly just represented with little pencil squiggles. At the end of the book it is easier to see, since it is made of glowing lights, but during a huge fight scene in the beginning I was really struggling to see the sand magic. I'll assume this will get better in future volumes.Overall, a good read, and looking forward to volume 2, where maybe my nitpicky stuff will be fixed? Brandon Sanderson is the shizz, so I'm sure this will end up being a worthy addition to the Cosmere.

I want to start by saying that I am a big Sanderson fan and I have read the majority of his work, including everything cosmere related. This graphic novel has a very compelling story with another unique magic system from Brandon. The book starts off with excitement and there really is not a dull moment in this novel. The art work is fantastic and it really helps the story come to life right before your eyes. I had a hard time reading the book do to it's nature as a graphic novel. Many of the main characters look quite similar and sometimes it took me a minute to determine who was speaking. I do want to say that I don't regularly venture into graphic novels, and I read this one solely because I love Brandon's work. I felt that by making it a graphic novel there are bits of the world and story that I am missing, but this could be due to the fact that I tend to gloss over the pictures rather than studying then in depth. That said if you like graphic novels I think this is a must read, and if you don't why not give it a try and if you like it take a look at Brandon's other books and you will have a whole new universe to explore.

White Sand - Brandon SandersonBrandon Sanderson’s Cosmere—the greater universe in which the majority of his books takes place—was recently optioned for film and licensing rights for $270 million, which is nothing-to-sneeze-at success, if you ask me. I’m eager to see the visual adaptations of his books, but I worry that because I’ve got such a vivid picture of them in my mind, I’ll be disappointed by one or another quality of the films. It happens all the time. (Dune’s getting a third chance, too. I wonder where that’ll go off the rails.)But the excitement of seeing any of Sanderson’s worlds come to life, especially one as hauntingly beautiful as Scadrial (the planet on which the Mistborn series takes place), is too exciting to overlook. I mean, if this series is done right, the larger Cosmere universe will easily rival Marvel or Star Wars. Sanderson’s creations are that good. Better, even.Which brings me to White Sand, the first book of the only graphic novel in the Cosmere universe. The planet Taldain (home of White Sand’s story) is as rich and intriguing a world as any of Sanderson’s others, if a bit monochromatic at first. We meet Kenton, member of an order of Sand Masters—able to wield ribbons of sand to spectacular martial effect—on the eve of the order’s annihilation.The world, the sands, the suits, the faces—everything’s white. For what should ostensibly be a flat world, there’s a great and seemingly sinister depth lurking. But for what it’s worth, this story didn’t connect with me the way his written novels did. I can’t point my finger at why, though. White Sand has all the makings of a great Sandersonian epic: spectacular vistas, great magic, human drama, strange and terrifying changes to the status quo, but I found myself, more than once, wishing that I could also read White Sand as a novel.I remain confident that the story of White Sand will blossom in volume two, in which I hope to learn more about Taldain—which seems to be a planet without axial rotation, as it has a light side and a dark side—and the curious folk that fill out the rest of the planet that isn’t in the magical monastery.But back to this idea that the story didn’t have the same staying power of his prose work. The art is fantastic, the writing solid, and the final product is top-shelf, but I wasn’t absorbed into White Sand the way I’d hoped to be. But because I’m a die-hard Sanderson fan to the maxxx, I will sequester myself in my bedchamber, reading and re-reading White Sand until I get it.That, or I’ll just wait for volume two, which is set to release in June, 2017.White Sand is available on Amazon.

If I could give this 0 stars I would. I thought I was purchasing a grayscale coloring book that had 5 different shades of gray on the coloring pages so you knew how dark to shade. When I got my package I skipped right to this book (I bought other coloring books) and flipped through it just to find out it was 50 pages of gray dots. Ok so maybe I can still get some use out of it so I search the whole book just to find out there is no instructions either. Good thing Amazon has a great return policy!

Very Frustrating.2 pages with butterfly drawings and 22 pages of gray dots. No instructions.

Love this book. Have the butterfly version, will buy the fantasy soon! I've noticed that some are confused about this book. When you color grayscale, your colors can change or sometimes look different on top of the gray images. This is a color swatch book, but you are putting your swatches on top of grayscale so that you have a truer idea of what they will look like on your picture. Great idea!

I disagree that the characters are underdeveloped and flat. You see, this is a story about Lottie, and Lottie is a self obsessed digital influencer--you're not supposed to get to know her friends on a deeper level because this isn't about them. They're probably not even truly friends. Normgirl IS supposed to be forgettable and replaceable because that's how Lottie thinks of her. As for Lottie herself, I get the feeling volume 1 is setting her up as a shallow person now to better show her changes later as we delve deeper into this strange turn of events. If the rest of this volume had just continued with the initial vain blogger plot line, it would have been a cute but rather boring series, but I like where it's going and definitely will be reading more.

I picked this up on a whim (I find that I really enjoy most Image titles), and what started out as a seemingly fluff story about fashion bloggers and their rather shallow lives takes a surprising turn into something more... sinister? A mysterious "resurrection", possible supernatural elements, a stalker, a police investigation into the possible death of the possibly resurrected friend, and another possible murder. Or is it all just an allergy drug-induced hallucination? We'll have to wait until the next collected edition to find out more, but needless to say I was pleasantly surprised and thoroughly intrigued to find out what happens next.

I picked this up based on YouTuber ComicBookGirl 19's recommendation. I love her movie reviews & she doesn't recommend things lightly. It was an easy sell though, when I found out it was from the creator of Scott Pilgrim.It's an engaging modern satire that switches deftly from a light comedy to a fever dream akin to 'Fight Club' and back again.I read the first four issues in one sitting & I would have finished it then if time had allowed. I'm anxiously awaiting volume two.

Snotgirl is a quintessential read for any modern fashion or comics lover, or Internet nerd. It confronts friendship, breakups, online identity versus real identity, what it means to be a human being with struggles, and the whole time Leslie Hung's gorgeous art stands out as unique and beautiful. Lottie and Caroline and their interesting, strangely intertwined fate is fun and fascinating to follow in this first volume of Snotgirl. I love this and I can't wait to read more!

I needed a new comic and this was worth the buy! It may not appeal to everyone, however it did to me and I've enjoyed books such as Batgirl: The Darkest Reflection, Giant Days, and the Lumberjanes. The end was a twist I was not expecting and that is something I love about books! It's about the same length as any other comic book and the art was really amazing as well. It did have things not everyone may be interested in such as a character who is pretty obsessed with herself and her looks but I felt that this is what really made it it's own story. Really looking forward to more!

It's going to be a long wait, but I think I may wait for these books instead of the individual issues from now on. The art is still in full color, plus there is some lovely extra artwork & alternate covers that weren't in the individual issues. It was also less agonizing to read because this comic really builds up the suspense at the end of every chapter. I very much prefer one cliffhanger over five.

I absolutely love this series! The aesthetic is gorgeous, and the protagonist Lottie is delightfully unlikeable, yet you still want to root for her.The bright, vibrant aesthetic mixed with some dark twists and the suspense of an unreliable narrator story makes Snotgirl a must-read!

From the 11-year-old reader: In the comic Snotgirl there are a lot of twists and turns and especially drama. It takes drama to a whole 'nother level at one point. I found the characters to be humorous and a little quirky. One flaw is it's fast-paced; sometimes it seemed to just skip over parts of the story. I'm definitely ready to read the sequel.

EEEEK! I cant't say ENOUGH about how much I love this collector's addition book!!!!!!!!!! I read Vol. 2 in one day and immediately ordered 3 + 4 (so if you see my review on both vol. 3 and 4, that's why haha). The quality is great, the drawings are incredible, and the story makes me SWOON like a middle schooler (and I'm 19 yrs old). Plus- the price is 10x better here than in other book stores or other stores online !I will 100% be buying the rest of the series <3

Great drawings like this author. Story is sad, sweet, and at times funny. The whole series about support and loyalty of friendship and family. But mostly I think it is about acceptance - real acceptance of who the characters are and will become. I only have 2 manga collections because this isn't my choice for reading but i like this one 'Fruit Baskets' and 'Story of Saiunkoku' manga. I bought these because reading online isn't my preference and I like the art work it is different for me but I understand common for the genre of MANGA.

My friend introduced me to Fruits basket and recommended that I collect the Ultimate Editions. So I looked into it and decided it was a good idea. I absolutely loved the fact that it's a hard cover book with a couple of the books in one. I was hoping it would have been 3 per book instead of 2 like the Ruroni Kenshin mangas but I would still make due.I was a bit upset when I found out there are only 6 ultimate editions of Fruits Basket because Tokyopop was no longer continuing the rest, but nonetheless I found them to be a great collection. Some people wouldn't like that because they want their collections all the exact same, but I definitely recommend this collection if you're able to get your hands on them. If not, the singles are perfectly fine too, as I have read that the translation errors are still unchanged on the ultimate versions. This fact doesn't bother me so much as it might bother other collectors.Overall, I was quite happy with this and would definitely collect more if there were more in print. For others who want to read Fruits basket , I would recommend it but for the collectors who want everything to be exact then not so much.

I consider myself to be a reasonably attentive "Fruits Basket" fan. I bought TokyoPop's softcover manga volumes as they came out, enjoyed their version of the "Cat" fanbook, and even ended up getting a few Japanese-language artbooks for the series. I'm still waffling whether to spring for the omnibus manga reprints because of their hardcover bindings and upgraded pages (larger size, nicer paper). But I'm just plain irritated by this "Banquet" fanbook, and probably wouldn't've bought it if I'd had a chance to riffle through it beforehand.The vast majority of "Banquet" simply reports the results of fan surveys from the original Japanese readership: the top 20 favorite chapters, the top 15 favorite pairs, the top 20 favorite characters. The "Cat fanbook had some similar stuff that I just skimmed over and ignored, but with "Banquet", that's what most of this book *is*. With some of the top choices, Takaya provides a few lines of commentary or reaction, but imho there's almost no new information or insight offered about the series, even in her two written interviews.There is an 8-page retrospective mini-manga that presents the thoughts of Takaya and her main characters about the series as a whole, so that's a plus-- it's not really substantive, but it's cute. There's also a nice full-color gallery in front, showing some chapter intro images that were shown as monochrome in the main manga volumes.But most of the book just feels like fan filler to me, and I'm really irritated when the formatting keeps flinging tiny blocks of text between panels and sideways. (I also wish that the Furuba glossary at the end had retained at least the romaji for each main entry to give some sense of order-- they're still "alphabetized" by their original kana order, but without the original Japanese words, the English-language entries now seem to be jumbled in random order.)If you're interested in static summaries of what Japanese fans thought about the series, then you may enjoy this book much more than I did. But for the most part, I'm not and I didn't.
