Unless you are obsessed with the styles in the title of my review, this book won't help much. The theories are repeated ad nauseum, with no variety in how the points are illustrated. So how do you have a rustic/country/farmhouse/Early American not-so-big house? Or a French or Italianate? Or a "traditional" (whatever that means). Or Scandinavian. Or ADA? You get the drift: you have to use your imagination. Very disappointed, as we are downsizing and I was looking for pointers.

Good book, with lots of nice pictures. Two main problems: (1) many of the houses are actually pretty big and (2) its all a bit dated. Time for an update reflecting current design and construction techniques.

I love all of Sarah Susanka's books. I especially enjoy the photography with before and after shots showing how small details can make a difference. This book is the first in the series. I enjoy Sarah's philosophy regarding having less square footage but incorporating more meaningful features. Sarah admits that the details do not make the house less expensive to build. We have used some of the book's concepts for decorating, arranging furniture, and paint colors. We have an "away room" as suggested by Sarah and I love it. It offers peace and quiet whereas the rest of our downstairs living space is open. In the past, I borrowed the Not So Big House books from our library but I love owning them. It is such a pleasure to own these books and I would recommend them them to anyone with an interest in home design.

I see some complaints that people are quantifying the square footage of the Not So Big House. YES, some of them are still big... For some big families, 4000 sq ft might be Not So Big. For some individuals who like to live big, even 4000 sq ft might be Not So Big. I think another term that could be used would be JUST RIGHT. For one person, depending on his/her lifestyle, 4000 sq ft might be Just Right. Some people are saying "What?!? I live in 1,500 sq ft" or even "800 sq ft" ... and this book "has examples of 2,500 sq ft... that's not 'Not So Big'!!!". Well, yes, FOR THAT PERSON. Again, it's not about the actual size. It's about being JUST RIGHT.Again, the complaints of some reviewers focus really on area covered, rather than the real focus of the book: quality of life in one's living space. The book does say, in one example, that a couple with children moved from a 4,000 sq ft McMansion to a 2,500 sq ft house THAT WAS NOT MUCH MORE INEXPENSIVE than the 4,000 sq ft house -- in other words, it costs almost as much, even though it is only roughly 60% the size of their former bigger house. But, the point is, this book was giving ideas on how we really use rooms and areas of the house, so not only are the areas of use maximized, but also ENJOYED.Spend on details like trimmings, lighting, etc... on details that count (to make it cozy, inviting, warm, or whatever effect one is after), instead of area, and instead of having just a big house, you end up with a LIVEABLE house. And this is where this book shines: it shows examples (and comparisons of) big (and even impressive) rooms and houses that seem cold and uninviting, to a smaller area (again, smaller being relative) that is WELL DESIGNED, not to impress, but rather to be a place where one wants to be. And that is precisely what a home should be -- a place where one wants to be. The Not So Big House is really just another way of saying the HOME that is FOR YOU.There are many examples of making basically small areas like the dining, living, kitchen, etc... and make it seem like one BIG area because of the lack of walls, and yet still make them separate (using lighting, ceiling height, etc) from each other. But, it looks bigger, even if it's really Not So Big.This is an idea book, not a book about actual square feet (I really should be using square meters, because it's metric where I'm from, but anyway...). And, as an idea book on how to maximize space, and maximize quality of life in a house to make it a home, it deserves top props.I rate this book 4.5 stars (not quite the 5 I gave), because even if this is the 10th anniversary edition, it could use more pictures/examples of the Not So Big lifestyle and designs, and how they all work.

First of all, I bought this book used and it was not in very good condition. A page that I really wanted to read was missing, for one thing. Unfortunately, I can't recall the seller's name now but I left a bad review when I received no response to my concern. But anyway, the book itself was very good. My husband and I are remodeling a house built in 1949 which used every nook and cranny for some function. It doesn't fit the modern concept of lots of empty space, so we are working on creating a little more empty space while using some of Susanka's ideas for making certain areas more compact. We are expanding our kitchen into a porch, but the ceiling in the porch is lower and this book gave us the idea to just keep it as it is because lowered ceilings add character and are something Frank Lloyd Wright used. I also like her recommendations for wood trim and moulding to warm up rooms and use many windows to bring the outside in. As my title implies, some of the details are pretty outdated such as any picture involving a computer and the kitchen chairs, but that can be overlooked since the overall ideas are still very usable.

From the Back Cover

The 5th edition of this popular book has been fully updated for PHP 7, including replacing the PEAR package manager with Composer, and new material on Vagrant and PHP standards. It provides a solid grounding in PHP's support for objects, it builds on this foundation to instill core principles of software design and then covers the tools and practices needed to develop, test and deploy robust code. PHP Objects, Patterns, and Practice begins by covering PHP's object-oriented features. It introduces key topics including class declaration, inheritance, reflection and much more. The next section is devoted to design patterns. It explains the principles that make patterns powerful. The book covers many of the classic design patterns and includes chapters on enterprise and database patterns. The last segment of the book covers the tools and practices that can help turn great code into a successful project. The section shows how to manage multiple developers and releases with git, how to manage builds and dependencies with Composer. It also explores strategies for automated testing and continuous integration.Taken together, these three elements: object fundamentals, design principles, and best practice, will help the reader develop elegant and rock solid systems.

VERY good book.BUY it, if you really want to learn objects and patterns in PHP.I have 14 years of PHP development experience and I learned A LOT from this book.Very well written and with very good examples.Highly recommend to any level PHP developers!

I've owned PHP Objects, Patterns, and Practice for over a year, and it's still one of those books I go back to. It's a well written, generally well executed book on what constitutes Object Oriented Programming in the PHP5 environment.First, the good news:This book is a crash course on OOP design and thought. It borrows heavily from two monumentous texts in the field - the Gang of Four's book, and Java Enterprise Patterns - and condences their essences into an easy to swallow form. The basics are all here: how to create well designed classes, how to instantiate objects, etc. There's a hidden gem in the introductory portion of the book: the Reflection API. This API is built into PHP, and gives the coder unparalleled access to the guts of the classes and objects in a given project. It definitely has its uses. The patterns are all generally useful, with the only exception perhaps being the Interpreter pattern. I'm just not convinced that creating one's own command line interface syntax is necessary, given that PHP projects aren't usually interactive. It seems like something best left to an appendex, or extra web content. Now, for the bad news:Some sections of the book, especially some of the code examples, could've used a better editor. Small things, the kinds of things that can trip up inexperienced coders, crop up. Using private properties instead of protected. Using the wrong variable name between examples. That sort of thing. There's also a lack of a satisfying conclusion, so-to-speak. Zandstra himself claims that generating objects is perhaps the hardest thing to demonstrate. Yet, most of his examples (excepting the patterns late in the book) are canned. Objects and classes exist only to drive the theory behind a pattern home. Few real world examples are given. Admittedly, some patterns are simple to transfer to a real project, but concrete examples of that nature could serve to further cement his point. For example, it's not difficult to see how the Composite pattern would work well for dealing with an XML document, but would there ever be a need for a Visitor object to act on one? Finally, and in continuation of my last criticism, Zandstra never touches one of the things PHP is used the most for: form handling. Can forms be represented by classes? Could forms be generated by objects (perhaps using a Factory pattern)? What about form validators? Wouldn't the Strategy or Decorator pattern work? Supplementing his online Civilization game and CLI/quiz examples with this would've really put the book over the top.Still, with that said, PHP Objects, Patterns, and Practice is still a text that gets far more right than wrong. It's definitely a must-buy for those PHP coders looking to write modular code.

The book starts a bit silly. If I'm reading a book about object oriented PHP development, is because I WANT to do OOP with PHP, you don't have to sell it to me or tell me that since previous versions there was some hideous object orientation-like structure. I fear this comes to "fix" the issue that a most of the opensource PHP projects I've seen are not object oriented (or were not when I looked at them), so the book tries to teach how to do things better in OOP.Apart from that, it starts not teaching you the basics of PHP, but entering directly into objects in PHP5, which I appreciate. It goes step by step explaining everything, and giving good advices of bad practices to avoid. There are a lot of notes of how to "fix" the code for PHP4, not bad, but a bit annoying. Given the poor object orientation of all previous versions, the book should stick to PHP5 only. The book explains all basic concepts of OOP (including advices and good practices), UML diagrams, going on to specific design pattern implementations in Part 3 of the book. This has been for me personally the "gold" part of the book, specific PHP 5 implementations of DP allowed me to see true object oriented source codes. The patterns come from three widely known books, and are very well explained. We can find from the typical Singleton or Factory, to some other advanced ones like the Strategy or the Observer. The code samples are quite good, giving you direct examples of how to implement a Factory design pattern or playing with classes and inheritance to show exactly how they work. There is a lot of theory and good practices too. Much better than the usual hello world and simple ones, this codes can be really of help in real word scenarios.Avoiding reinventing the wheel, whenever necessary the book mentions the SPL (Standard PHP Library) for already available pattern tools and objects (like the Observer or the Iterator).Chapter 11 goes on some Gang of Four patternns (the classics), but chapter 12 talks about enterprise patterns, and chapter 13 database patterns. One of the big examples is actually how to build a full MVC engine, with a frontend controller, an application controller for the logic, views, templates (including the Template pattern by Flowler)...After the MVC and presentation patterns, another bunch of Business Logic Layer patterns (like the Domain Models), and then goes into Database patterns, like the Data Access Layer, Identity Map...When approaching serialization, gives good advices on how to do it. And if any kind of code hack or "non-perfect technique" is performed, we are advised of it very clearly. I wish other books were so careful to try to teach only good things...After a bit more than 300 pages, the book switches to non-coding advices, tips and basic knowledge, like source code control (but using CVS, which is quite outdated!!), PEAR, testing with PHPUnit, automated builds...This part for me felt a bit like filling up pages of the book. If I want generic advices I will search for them, I was searching for design patterns applied to PHP and as much as general advices, not more than 160 pages of non-patterns stuff.Being a .NET developer since years, at first looks strange to me to be teached once and again that I should use classes and structure accordingly the code. While not yet perfect, object orientation in PHP5 looks useful enough to be able to do really good architectures for web applications, it just lacks more restrictions to avoid an inmense amount of errors that still can happen if you're not a skilled PHP developer (things like dynamic properties creation, untyped parameters or dynamic class instantiation should be at least redone in a more restrictive syntax). Also, I liked the author's point of view, not telling you to always implement design patterns the same way, but understand what they try to solve, and extract what you need for your projects. I really wish other books (whenever about PHP or any other language) had so good and real-life practical examples as this one. This book is a must-read for PHP developers that want to take out the common thinking of "you can't do clean code with PHP" (which sadly occurs too often). Even when it should be only 300 pages, is worth it (but is also why I'm giving it 3 stars out of 5).

Matt Zandstra gives a good coverage of multiple OOP patterns applied to PHP programming, with good tips about where and how to use them. He also gives a small intro de PHP and write a lot about other topics (the "Practice" part of the book: using PEAR, testing, version control, continuos integration, etc.) all applied to PHP programming. Lot of people think this book is only for advanced programming but I think even novices would benefit from it. If you already have a previous edition this edition is a good upgrade (Matt rewrote some chapters, specially the ones on Practice). Even the printing is far better than the 3rd edition (the previous edition used terrible font and spacing making it hard to read) and it's more compact. I recommend this book to any PHP developer (novices or experts alike).

I have several years of Java experience and I needed to learn PHP for work. Because of my Java experience, I didn't need to learn programming in PHP from scratch - just take what I know in Java and learn how to do it in PHP. (I uset this book in combination with other online exercises.) This book helped me do that, and as an added bonus provided a refresher on object oriented design and design patterns.

Very, very instructive book for intermediate to advanced PHP programmers. There are many 'professional' developers who really ought to study this book or one like it, such as Introduction to Algorithms, Pattern Hatching, or Design Patterns, all available on Amazon.

God: The Most Unpleasant Character in All Fiction by Dan Barker and Richard Dawkins“God: The Most Unpleasant Character in All Fiction” is an expose of “God’s” true qualities based on the very book that attempts to describe “Him”. Taking a page from Richard Dawkins, former evangelist minister and co-president of the Freedom from Religion Foundation, Dan Barker takes the readers on a journey through the Bible and during this trip he clearly describes the “Lord Jealous”. This provocative 322-page book includes twenty-eight chapters broken out by two parts: Part 1. Dawkins Was Right and Part II. Dawkins Was Too Kind.Positives:1. Well-researched, well-written book. Barker takes glee in exposing the character of “God”.2. The fascinating topic of the characterization of “God” through analyzing the Bible. “The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.”3. The chapters are broken out by character traits. Each chapter begins with a biblical appropriate passage. “A jealous and avenging God is the Lord, the Lord is avenging and wrathful.” —Nahum 1:2”4. Barker knows the Bible with mastery and provides countless biblical passages that clearly supports his main points. “He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering.” (Genesis 22:2)”5. So many biblical passages that will make your head spin. “Leviticus 19:28 “You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh on account of the dead or tattoo any marks upon you: I am the Lord.”6. Traits of an unjust “God”. “Exodus 22:18 “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.””7. The concept of hell. “The concept of eternal Hell, a truly infinite lack of forgiveness, does not occur until the New Testament, thanks to Jesus.”8. Many examples of “God’s” Type-A micromanagement.9. Traits of a vindictive “God”. “Deuteronomy 32:35 “The Lord says, … ‘I will take revenge; I will pay them back. In due time their feet will slip. Their day of disaster will arrive, and their destiny will overtake them.’””10. The bloodthirsty lord. “For the life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it to you for making atonement for your lives on the altar; for, as life, it is the blood that makes atonement. (Leviticus 17:11)”11. Threatening nonbelievers, so cruel. “2 Chronicles 15:13 “All who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, were to be put to death, whether small or great, man or woman.””12. Ethnic cleanser of biblical proportions. “Go and attack Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have; do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey. (1 Samuel 15:3)”13. Misogyny and plenty of it. “Deuteronomy 22:28–29 “If a man meets a virgin who is not betrothed, and seizes her and lies with her, and they are found, then the man who lay with her shall give to the father of the young woman fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife, because he has violated her; he may not put her away all his days.” RSV (You broke it, you buy it.)”14. So anti-gay. “Leviticus 20:13 “If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall be put to death; their blood is upon them.””15. The Bible endorses slavery, how terrible. “Leviticus 25:44–46 “As for your male and female slaves whom you may have: you may buy male and female slaves from among the nations that are round about you. You may also buy from among the strangers [NRSV: “aliens”] who sojourn with you and their families that are with you, who have been born in your land; and they may be your property.””16. Examples of infanticide. “O daughter Babylon, you devastator! Happy shall they be who pay you back what you have done to us! Happy shall they be who take your little ones and dash them against the rock! (Psalm 137:8–9)”17. Examples of megalomania. ““So I will display my greatness and my holiness and make myself known in the eyes of many nations. Then they shall know that I am the Lord.” —Ezekiel 38:23””18. Examples of malevolence. ““I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.” —Isaiah 45:7, KJV”19. Just a plain old bully. “But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not let the Israelites go. (Exodus 10:20)”20. Examples of flame-happy “God”. “Leviticus 21:9 “And the daughter of any priest, if she profane herself by playing the whore, she profaneth her father: she shall be burnt with fire.” KJV (Notice that her “crime” is profaning her father.)”21. And so much more.Negatives:1. I wanted more expert commentary from Barker.2. I would have added a section on how the Bible came together and the different versions.3. No notes or links. In summary, I enjoyed this book. It will serve as an excellent reference when I debate my Christian friends. Barker has great command of the topic and even takes glee in exposing what are clearly difficult and realistic characterizations of the biblical “God”. Provocative and what must be difficult for Christians to digest, this is the word of “God”. I recommend it.Further recommendations: “The God Delusion” by Richard Dawkins, “The Religion Virus” by James A. Craig, “50 Reasons People Give For Believing in a God” by Guy P. Harrison, “The God Virus: How Religion Infects Our Lives and Culture” by Darrel W. Ray, “End of Faith” by Sam Harris, “Faith No More: Why People Reject religion” by Phil Zuckerman, “Atheism Advanced” by David Eller, “Why We Believe In God(s): A Concise Guide to the Science of Faith” by J. Anderson Thomson Jr., “The Believing Brain” by Michael Shermer, and “Why I Became An Atheist” by John W. Loftus.

Great book, really shows the dark side of the "kind and loving god" we are all taught to believe in. I was a Christian for many years and never read the chapters and verses cited in this book. Anyone who calls themselves a Christian should read this book and prepare to defend their faith in light of what it reveals about the god they worship. Note that everything in this book is taken directly from the Bible, these are god's words in context, commands given to his loyal followers. They cannot be misconstrued or taken as metaphor. The book makes it abundantly clear that these orders were to be carried out and failure to do so meant death. I'm sure there will be negative reviews from Christians who have never read the book. Just the title alone will cause some folks to get angry. But if you haven't read it then go to the source. Read your own holy text. Any god who not only condones but orders his followers to commit rape, slavery, child sacrifice, murder, and genocide among other horrific acts is not worthy of my or anyone else's devotion, but in fact deserves our utter contempt, if he were in fact real. If pastors and priests were honest why do they not deliver sermons on the darker aspects of god. The god who made a man sacrifice his daughter to win a battle, or how after conquering a city everyone was killed except the young girls who were given to the Israelite soldiers to "do with what they wished". All on the direct orders of god. This book is well written, well researched and only reinforced my religious views. Even though it starts from the premise that god is fictional, it treats the god character as though he were real (in the context of the book) and that this god really did all of those terrible things. Each chapter is devoted to one of the aspects of god that Richard Dawkins described in his book "The God Delusion". There are chapters on how god is jealous, petty, genocidal, misogynistic, cannibalistic, etc all backed up by scripture. Indeed if you were to write a fictional book today that incorporated all of the negative aspects of god into one villain it would be ludicrous, laughable even. But the Holy Bible does just that, and these horrifying aspects of god are tucked away like dark alleyways in a bad part of town, never discussed crossed by quickly hoping not to be noticed. Dan Barker does a masterful job of hunting down these alleyways and shining a bright light on things rarely spoken of and never addressed from any pulpit.Even if you do not buy this book I implore you to grab your handy bible and starting at the beginning read it, I mean really read it, and think of the character of this supposed omnipotent, omniscient being, then look around you at the world and ask yourself "does what I see and understand about the universe match up with the collected stories of a small isolated group of Bronze Age nomadic sheepherders". And why out of all the people living all over the planet, some with vastly greater influence and power, why was this tiny isolated relatively powerless tribe chosen? As you continue to read ask yourself "does this make sense"? On your journey if you happen to buy this book things may become just that much more clear. Use those powers of reason and critical thinking that we all were born with take a small step out of your comfort zone.

#136,710 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I bought this (from Book Depository UK) and A Journey Through a History of Magic (from Amazon). Both books are awesome! However, between the two, I prefer this book than the latter because it is hardbound, whereas Journey is an oversized paperback. Also, this book has more pages, illustrations and details. Of course, it cost almost thrice as much as Journey. But, believe me, it is worth the extra dollars!

This beautiful volume is one of two official books published in conjunction with the Harry Potter: A History of Magic exhibition that was held at the British Library in London between October 2017–February 2018.A collaboration between the British Library, Bloomsbury (the UK publisher of the Harry Potter series), and J.K. Rowling, the exhibition was created to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the publication of the first Harry Potter book. Featured were documents and artifacts from the development of the Harry Potter series along with real-world magical artifacts. The book, like the exhibition, includes various sections based on classes taught at Hogwarts (e.g. herbology, divination, care of magical creatures, and so forth). The chapters have images of the artifacts and documents from the exhibition, including a few pages of Harry Potter book drafts, a map of the grounds around Hogwarts, and drawings of characters from the Wizarding World (all created by Rowling)! The documents from Rowling are my favorite; I enjoy being able to see how Rowling herself envisioned Hogwarts and the characters, as the artwork featured in most Harry Potter books was created by artists working for the various book publishers. Just FYI, the number of pages devoted to the history of real-word magic and artifacts does outnumber the Harry Potter stuff.Harry Potter: A History of Magic (ISBN 9781408890769) is the larger of the two books published by Bloomsbury for the exhibition. It is hardcover, geared towards older readers, and because of its size contains more of what was shown in the exhibition. Bloomsbury's second book, Harry Potter - A Journey Through A History of Magic (ISBN 9781408890776) is paperback, smaller, and geared towards families. When the exhibition opened in London, Scholastic (the US publisher of the Harry Potter series) published the smaller family oriented Harry Potter: A Journey Through a History of Magic (ISBN 9781338267105) in the United States. I believe the only major difference between the Bloomsbury edition and the Scholastic edition is different cover artwork. The exhibition is going to be opening in New York City in October 2018, and Scholastic will be displaying some of their collection related to publishing the Harry Potter series in the United States. When that exhibition opens, Scholastic will be publishing their own version of the larger Harry Potter: A History of Magic.Because Scholastic will be adapting the larger book for American audiences—more so than they did with the smaller book—I chose to purchase the Bloomsbury edition of the larger book here on Amazon and will purchase the Scholastic edition once it is published as well. I didn't feel I was missing out on any new content by purchasing only the Scholastic edition of the smaller book.

This is a wonderful book for any Harry Potter fan. The American version is paperback and made for kids with activities and less info. This one however, is hardback, with a gorgeous cover, and is full of wonderful insights and information about the world of Harry Potter. It's worth the extra money to buy! It has extra art of artifacts, essays and is worth it!

WOW! This book is incredible! I didn't expect this much detail, this much beauty. This book really acts a museum exhibit, showing the overlap of the Harry Potter world and the history of magic and science as we know it. The inclusions of character profiles, JK Rowling's notes and drafts, and Jim Kay and Olivia --'s drawings from the illustrated book really add the last tough. This is gorgeous and any Harry Potter fan would find it beautiful and informational.I reviewed the other History of Magic book here: https://www.amazon.com/review/R3MFND9Q8YWFX4/ref=cm_cr_srp_d_rdp_perm?ie=UTF8 It's more for people who enjoy Harry Potter, taking you through the Hogwarts curriculum. There's some overlap but both books are great reads, separately.

This is an absolutely awesome book. Make sure to buy this one...it's the hardcover British version. I saw the paperback version this weekend in a store and it is no where near as great as this version. The stories are so intriguing. I love how it threads reality, rumor, mythology etc. to show how J.K. Rowling was impacted in her story telling.Buy this book. You will not regret it. Will be buying as gifts for other Harry Potter fans.

So I purchased this book in order to understand some of the background and history behind the gigantic, full of folklore world of HP and I wasn’t disappointed. The book is very well written with accompanying photographs, manuscripts and detailed illustrations from various artists including extremely rare pieces of art made by J.K Rowling before she became the world’s most notable children’s writer (except that HP books are pretty much for everyone regardless of age lol)The printing quality of the pages is also spot on and the colors are very good. The book is organized very well and gives you a glimpse into the magical world in separated chapters (Herbals, Divination, Dark Arts etc)So if you’re a Harry Potter fan, Don’t hesitate too much and get it for yourself - definitely worth it.

Kindle is not a good format for this book. If you have poor eyesight, beware this isn't an actual book with printed words, but rather copies of "maps", and "documents", which I think do not lend themselves well to the e-reader format. Exchanging it for a physical copie.

The book was great but I used it more as an addition to the audible book. It was great to look at the pictures while the audible describes each picture in detail and with the actual artist explaining what they were thinking when they did the art work. Much more information in the audible and really discussed the history of what many of us may consider magic back during times when humans were still discovering new continents. Does a good job of understanding the origins of when people started believing in magic. Modern medicine and investigation today would, of course, prove it all to be false. Overall, good book for Harry Potter fans and also for those that enjoy world history.

The Adaptive School: A Sourcebook for Developing Collaborative Groups (Christopher-Gordon New Editions)

Review

In this timely Third Edition of their important ground-breaking book on Adaptive Schools, Garmston and Wellman have incorporated new research and recent experience on leadership and organizational development to flesh out with concrete and practical guidance how an adaptive school, teacher, principal and administrator can successfully navigate through the constant, rapid change and future uncertainty which is our new normal. If we are going to prepare young people to be successful in this reality, we ourselves have to learn and practice the skills for acting adaptively and for creating schools, human systems as they are, that can survive and thrive under these conditions. This revised edition is a powerful but not hostile counterweight to the push toward measurement and short-term accountability that threatens to suck the life out of individuals, organizations, communities and, yes, schools where inspiring lifelong learning and capacities for adaptation has to be the most important goal. (Marty Linsky, co-author, "Leadership on the Line" and "The Practice of Adaptive Leadership")Through The Adaptive Schools Sourcebook, Garmston and Wellman develop the language and structures of the learning organization in a choreography of collaboration, diversity, and energy. The book provides school leaders with tools, strategies and conditions for a responsive mindset, setting the stage for perpetual growth, innovation and a capacity to thrive. This sourcebook makes sense of the ever-changing landscape and complexity of our schools as we work to access the limitless power of learning. (Michael Webb, elementary principal, Airport Heights, Anchorage Alaska, architecture writer, co-founder)Whether or not you’ve seen or read The Theory of Everything, this is 'The Practice of Everything' in educational change. In this magnum opus, two living legends of coaching, mentoring and consulting show us the bold designs and build the bricks and mortar of adaptive change. Adaptive change, they demonstrate brilliantly, is incremental and disruptive, involves loss and growth, must be viewed from the balcony and on the dance floor — and is remarkably complex and incredibly simple all at the same time. Read. Think. And be inspired to act. (Andy Hargreaves, Brennan Chair in Education, Boston College; Adviser to the Premier and Minister of Education of Ontario)

As I'm partial to Warren W. Wiersbe's commentaries, and the size of this is so compact, it is great to have. It is, of course not as complete as his study commentaries, but gives enough succinct information to definitely assist when studying the Bible on the run, traveling, or just not wanting to do an in-depth exploration of each chapter. His research and way of wording things generally helps clarify things more than most. It helps me find more quickly the key material I want to learn and study even more fully. The print is crisp and easy to read as well.

My husband first bought this book many years ago and it is a family stable. Our grown children both have it and my husband has bought numerous copies for anyone who showed interest in the Bible. It is easy to read and Warren Wiersbe really infuses his own experiences in with Biblical ones. No one's personal nor professional library should be without it. Highly recommend!!

Reading the topic of the chapter from this prior to reading the actual chapter from the bible has really opened up my understanding and intent when reading my KJV AV1611. I read the bible daily at minimum twice a day and one can miss meaning or intent of certain chapters or versus and miss the main intent or meaning. What I do now is after prayer (prior to reading the bible) I read this topic of the chapter from "With The Word" to help set the expectation, meaning and intent of the chapter - then I read the chapter in the bible and immediately I begin to gain new insight due to the fact that I recall what I read from the "With The Word" and it just brings it all TOGETHER! Again, it adds an exciting way to read the bible - I do believe this is a must to have the bible open up to you!

We are reading through the New Testament as a congregation this year and are using this book as a companion to the Bible. I like that the author specifically states in the introduction that his book is not a substitute for the Bible but to be read alongside it. He does a great job applying each chapter of scripture to our lives.

I like the size of the book. It is easy to fit in your hand to read. His comments are very clear and concise. He provide excellent insight to the meaning of Bible passages. Also, he gives you some things to think about and apply to your own life.

Excellent tools to do the preparation for the Sunday School class for all ages. It is easy to understand. I always love Pastor Wiersbe's Be Series. This book that I have read in daily basis during my devotional time makes my study soothing. Anyone who loves to study God's Word; I encourage him/her purchase the book. He or she will be blessed and well-nourished..

For someone who is not very familiar with the Bible it is a good recourse. Some, a few, of his statements are a little far out, I think. But there is NOTHING there that goes against Gods Word. Lewis

I've used Wiersbe OT and NT commentaries for years now, I don't know why I never thought to buy this handbook. What a breeze to work on messages when I can begin with Wiersbe's outlines and key notes, and add my own illustrations and relevant material for the group I'm addressing. I praise God for Warren Wiersbe and other great preachers who have written their messages down and made them available for all of us to use to advance the kingdom of God.
