This collection is essential reading for all FO'B fans, as I was meself at a time when it was neither profitable nor popular. The Conrad sequence alone is worth the price of admission.But it is marred by some of the worst footnotes ever seen. FO'B might say they were lathered on as with a signwriting brush, clearly the work of a madman, ably assisted by that bright slip of a girl out of the upper fifth, a touch on the literal-minded side. There are footnotes for practically anything that starts with a capital letter, earnestly telling us who e.g. St Augustine, James Joyce, Verdi, Shakespeare, and Hitler are. The whole apparatus is worthy of a Cruiksheen Lawn column, or several conflicting pseudomymous letters to the Irish Times, if indeed it isn't already some ghostly joke from beyant the grave of Flann O'Brien the same man, along the lines of the de Selby footnotes in The Third Policeman, which can be read separately as an independent story. But FO'B would be mightily amused to read that by the Knights he means the Knights Templar, when any gobsheen knows anny time he talks about Knights it is about those earnest gentlement the Knights of St Columbanus with their no doubt unintended paramilitary overtones. Similarly Wagner, Keats, Wordsworth, Winston Churchill, Karl Marx, Charles Dickens ('famous'), 'Hard Times', Plato, Luther, Thomas Acquinas, Kruschev, Einstein, Judas Iscariot, JFK, Sherlock Holmes, de Gaulle, John the Baptist, 'the Boche', and friendly societies do not need to be footnoted at all. Harold Wilson is footnoted at least twice (with and without pipe); ditto James Joyce, T.S. Eliot, etc.; ditto 'nom de guerre', which is rather uselessly translated literally rather than giving its actual usage, as are 'croix de guerre' and several other alien expressions. 'A tune from Rose Marie' obviously refers to the (Rudi) Friml-Stothart-Harbach-Hammerstein musical/operetta, filmed thrice within 28 years and all but inescapable in those years, not to whatever obscure American singer pops up first in Google. 'P.P.' means Parish Priest, as seen outside any RC church, and used by FO'B several times in 'The Dalkey Archive', not some non-existent abbreviation for the Pope. There is no 'perhaps' about the references to Damon Runyon, Ezra Read, Simon Stylites, etc. Is Verdi really best known for 'Aida'? 'The Spectator' was founded in 1828, not 1928. The 'dactyl, as in Kennedy' can only refer to 'Slattery', not the whole of 'Slattery's Sago Saga'. And so on.And the index is typeset on a system unknown to typographical science, making it unusable.

Our child isn't "explosive" but just way harder to get to do stuff than some - i.e. transition from bed to up, from TV to homework, from friend's house to car, etc. This book really helps in explaining those behaviors so they make sense and giving techniques to avoid the threats and yelling that I hate to say was getting pretty common in our house. Maybe better title: "The Explosive Parent; A New Approach for Understanding and Dealing With the Strange Person You Become sometimes when Dealing With Your Child."

I will admit it... my first 2 kids were very easy. So easy, in fact that I was lulled into a false sense of confidence about this parenting thing. I might even have to admit that I got a bit smug and yes...it's true...Judge-y. Yep. I would see parents with a child who was screaming and out of control and think something along the lines of "They only need to be consistent and set firm boundaries and then their little monster will become docile and compliant like my amazing kids..." So you have probably heard of the great scripture, "Judge not, lest ye be judged." well...all I can say is that Yikes. God is listening and God has a sense of humor. Yeah...I'm living that scripture out in a real world way with child #3. Trust me...in my mind I have apologized to every stranger I ever stood in arrogant judgement of...a million times over. I wish I could write them encouraging notes and tell them I know they have probably tried every trick in the book and to please know that their horribly behaved child is NOT a reflection of them and poor parenting (as I have eaten so much crow about!!!). I have apologized in person to the parents I know in real life for thinking they might have been missing the "magic touch" to tame their wild beast. I am now the weary, battle-scarred and infinitely more humble mom to one such wild beast...errrr rather, "explosive child."Our daughter's OT suggested this book and I'm pretty sure I sounded like really enthusiastic parishioner during a great sermon because I found myself blurting out "YES!!" "That's exactly right!" and "Amen!!" a few times...and I suddenly felt understood and human again. But, most importantly, I understood my little explosive child much better and began to learn ways to avoid her going into VAPOR LOCK and being "unreachable" and volatile.Does she still throw humiliating tantrums without regard to where we are or who might witness it? Yes. Am I still mortified in those moments and begging God to spontaneously combust me? Yes. Will that ever change...? I doubt it. lol But we are doing better now that I have a more solid understanding of her psychology and how to work with it.If you are looking at this book, perhaps it is because someone in your life (a doctor, OT, Therapist, friend, or fellow parent of an explosive child) has recommended it, so please know I am praying for you! lol I do...I pray for parents everywhere who have a child like this because it is really the hardest thing I have ever undertaken as a parent!! Please know you are not alone....and as a reformed judger, I can only say I am so so so sorry. I never knew!!! But I am humbled and wiser now...and still wondering if spontaneous combustion could save me from some of the more embarrassing locales of explosions.... :-)

At first the premise of this book is a little hard to take in, but once you do, it is a god send. It took me 2 readings to finally understand, believe, and then commit to the idea. Once I started using "Plan B" with my teen age daughter everything began to change, for the better.

I got this book two years ago for my 3 year old girl. She was frustrated, I was frustrated, and she had 2 younger siblings. We needed change. This book changed our lives. I took every word to heart. Wrote down the problems and came up with a strategy. Focused on one behavior at a time. It took months of hard work to see progress but one skill at a time has added up to a strong and amazing straight A Kindergartener who is thriving. I know her better than my other kids because of the journey we had to go threw together. The parent training I received from implementing the teachings in this book has made life so much easier for my other kids because whatever comes up, this mom has a plan. I realized today when referring this to a friend today just how far we have come. I had forgotten how hard things once more. And as I wathed her kid struggle like mine used to I couldn't help but think, that kid has amazing potential once his determination is pointed in the right direction. Yours can too. Read the book and study it like a college course. Your life and children's lives will change. Having a plan gives up hope. This is your plan.

Lots of insightful advice, but my kid got REALLY MAD when she found it on my nightstand.

As I progress through life, and accept that I'm not young any more, I also realize that the younger generations do not ingest books the way I do. If you look at the reviews for this book, especially at the 1 and 2 star ratings, you'll find a deplorable pattern. "It was too slow." No, you're not considering what you're reading. "The author is a racist." Definitely no, he's almost drawing a caricature of them to shine a great big spotlight on facism and bigotry in order to persuade the audience of just how evil these things are. "The ending was too abrupt." or "He obviously meant to write a sequel." No and no. After many thousands of words placed in thought provoking ways, the author challenges the audience to decide what the story means. And gives us license to pick the ending that we think fits the best.This story was written in the 60s, and is set then as well. What if the Axis won World War II is the major premise behind the setting. The conflicts highlight the extreme to which Japanese and German cultures could have gone, and the possible effects of living in a land under the control of one, and strongly influenced by the other. Imagine the Japanese concept of place, mixing with facist bigotry, overlaid on oppressed Americans living in a totalitarian world. PKD thoroughly denounces facism, bigotry and xenophobia.But the story is more than that. The plot is hidden from the reader as we see events from several points of view. And the narration ends with barely a paragraph of denouement. If you are not driven to contemplation about the meaning of life or the nature of reality by this work, you should read it again, slowly.

I was putting off buying this due to it having reviews like "confusing ending" however when watched the series on Amazon I was amazed and stunned at the same time. And i figured with all books and movies/tv adaptations the book is always better.We always see the commercials on tv for the what 'ifs' about history what if the Nazis won the war whats if World War II ended entirely different. We don't know for sure how this would actually have turned out but PKD offers some amazing insight to what it would have been like.Each character has there own unique persona and unique motives for what they are really out to get. Every character is masterfully developed. PKD doesn't just focus on the character's PKD is able to fully capture you imagination and create a beautifully horrid reality inside your mind as you read.This is one of the books that you will read reread and still be wondering about what truly happened or what the book was really about. One of the most complex and inciting books I have read and loved so deeply in a long time. Overall if you like alternative-history or books with complex backgrounds and amazing story's you should be sure to read this.

One of the greatest novels of th 20th century. I've been a PKD fan since the early 1980's, obsessively collecting his work, most of which at the time was out of print. It's safe to say that no person did more to shape my intellectual development as a teenager than Philip K. Dick. I am forever in his debt.That said, TMitHC is a treasure. It distills a number of Dick's obsessions into a taut character study set against the backdrop of a world going even more mad. Each of the 6 'protagonists' here are searching for truth. Only a couple of them are capable of facing it dignity.As with all of Dick's best work the world-building is efficient and brilliant. I re-read this recently to prepare myself for watching the new serial, and was reminded of just how good Dick's prose is. The casual racism of Mr. Childan, the inner strength of Juliana, the coldness of Joe Cinnadella. But, it is Mr. Tagomi who owns this novel. He is one of Dick's finest characters, at once pragmatic and idealistic. Mature and naive. The living embodiment of the Tao.The ending matters both textually and thematically. It separates the characters into those who can face the reality of their world and those who cannot.For those looking into PKD for the first time I highly recommend these books over all of the others (in my order of preference):1) Ubik2) Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep3) The Man in the High Castle4) Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said5) The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch6) Clans of the Alphane Moon7) A Scanner Darkly8) Martian Time-Slip9) Dr. Bloodmoney10) The Transmigration of Timothy ArcherOthers like Time Out of Joint, The Game-Players of Titan, Now Wait for Last Year, The Penultimate Truth and Galactic Pot Healer are fine diversions, but the books above are essential. VALIS is a difficult mess of a book. Timothy Archer is the only one of the 'trilogy' I actually enjoyed as a narrative.

Dianne Lake was 14 when she joined Charles Manson's Family. She was there because her mixed up parents decided they didn't have to take care of her anymore. That's why I say she's a victim.You want to reach through the book and shake her mom and dad until their teeth rattle. What in hell were they thinking?!But ultimately she's a victor. She got mental health help, testified against the murdering Charlie and his Family. She got an education, married happily, had kids, and created her own--real--family.Her feelings and adult analysis of how Charlie manipulated people are really interesting. As she looks back, she connects the dots. What she just accepted as Charlie's fiats back then, she now realizes were part of his plan for control and success. The specifics of how he got the Family and outsiders to do his bidding is fascinating.The book is well written and talks about aspects of Manson and his crew that other books don't cover. Whether you're interested in Manson, true crime, or biographies of people who successfully overcome the odds, it's a great read.

Overall this is probably the best memoir written by any of the former members of the Manson Family (Susan Atkins wrote a bunch, but they all feel like attempts to excuse herself, as does Tex Watkins's book). To her credit Lake admits at the beginning that many of these events took place 50 years ago and there are simply things she cannot remember, and that she is presenting things from her perspective. The only reason I'm giving this four stars instead of five is because it feels as if there is a crucial chapter missing between when she testifies against Manson et all in the first trial and the epilogue. I found myself wondering if anyone from the Family ever tried to contact her after 1978 (she mentions one pseudo-reporter finding her), and what her thoughts about these people -- in particular the girls whom she refers to at one point as her friends, lovers, and family -- after all of these years. I understand why she may not have wanted to write more about her husband and children, but -- particularly since the parole board recently voted to grant Leslie Van Houtten (whom Lake doesn't seem to have had liked much) parole -- I felt this was really needed. One (probably unintended) audience I think this book might resonate with would be girls in the 14-16 age range who might be struggling to connect with their family.

I don't want this book to end. Fascinating. I was a pseudo-hippie in the 70's - I remember this all. The author has written an interesting birds eye view of what it was like living with Charles Manson. I often thought briefly of heading toward a racier life than I actually did - so glad I did not. I chose working for a living in corporate America; I could have landed in a similar situation with the wrong guidance. Thank God Dianne you made it out in one piece. Your book is the kind of book I save for vacations in the islands or a long plane trip! I'm getting toward the end of the book - too bad. Good books like this are hard to find.

My interest in this book stems from my readings of Alice Miller’s early work and like many people, I’ve read "Helter Skelter". The curiosity of how a ‘Charles Manson’ could be created and how he could get so many followers has been an ongoing question since those horrible murders 50 years ago. Having viewed the PBS, “Summer of Love” documentary and seeing Netflix’s, “Mindhunter”, (which is a great book also), one significant key lies within this highly introspective account.In the PBS show, one point made is that the Haight-Ashbury District was teeming with young kids on their own. In light of current sex abuse scandals & the high incidence of pedophilia, I wondered how many of those vulnerable kids were escaping molesting environments and dysfunctional homes. Turns out my suspicions were correct with this history; Dianne Lane provides a very personal recollection of being a 14 year-old in 1967, in the LA and San Francisco area. Dianne’s heartbreaking family experience and her courageous portrayal sheds light on how kids need safe structure in their lives. Neither she or Manson had healthy upbringings and they intertwined in a perfect storm of deadly chaos. (At the very least known, Manson was burdened with abandonment, uprooting and deep shame at age 4 or 5 with his teenage mother’s imprisonment. He was sent into the Catholic school system thereafter.)Dianne is the narrator of her own account and she has a pleasing voice; she speaks clearly and the book is written with great focus and care. She shares the thoughts of a normal, young teen trying to navigate life with normal, early teenage drives and needs. Unfortunately, she was let down by the adults who surrounded her. I hope the insight in these books & programs available to the public, along with the daily increasing voices of women & men who’ve survived sexual abuse will make great change in how children are treated. We need to make less predators and we need to make less vulnerable kids. I believe it takes great courage to expose a personal history like this; I hope it makes a lasting imprint into our culture. I highly recommend this book to all parents, all adults and all abuse survivors. I deeply thank Dianne Lane for sharing her life.

tl;drI'm giving this 5 stars for the content in consideration of the authors.As for the Kindle format and O'Reilly's decision to not sell PDFs ZERO stars.Long story: I need to learn C# so decided this book would be good. Upon heading over to O'Reilly I discovered the uproar over their decision a few months ago to stop selling PDFs. WOW! - I some response to the uproar about them looking into providing PDFs as part of their Safari Subscription service - but as I couldn't find a link to purchase the PDF and I'm not interested in a $400 subscription I decided to try the Kindle version.I've got at least a hundred Kindle books in my library - all non-technical book - e.g. novels, non-fiction etc. I love the Kindle platform. But as I have discovered it has problems with technical books. The first problem is that it does not allow you to scroll pages. As a programmer you often need to see ON ONE SCREEN a section of code. Unfortunately, with Kindle (I'm using kindle on a mac) you can only see page n or page n+1. You cannot view the bottom half of page n and the top half of page n+1. For a general reading book this is not a problem. For studying code or long tables it is frustrating.Second problem is with cut and paste. Programmers often read parts of technical books and then copy some section of the code from the book and then paste it into their development environment (e.g vi / Vistual Studio / whatever). Unfortunately this simply does not work as expected.Here's an example line code as displayed in the Kindle reader:Task.Run (() => Console.WriteLine ("Foo"));Here's how it ends up pasted (either into a terminal window with vi running Visual Studio)Task.Run (() = > Console.WriteLine (" Foo"));Albahari, Joseph; Albahari, Ben. C# 7.0 in a Nutshell: The Definitive Reference (Kindle Locations 16438-16439). O'Reilly Media. Kindle Edition.Notice the additional line showing the author, title, etc. Now that is annoying but I can relatively easily delete that line and go about my work.The more insidious problem is the insertion of a space inserted between the "=" and the ">" characters (e.g. => vs. = >)This is a syntax error and causes this line of code to not compile and is not that easy to spot - especially when you are trying to learn a new language! You can imagine the *fun* that ensues when several or dozens or more lines end up with numerous syntax errors. You end up fixing bugs due to a broken copy/paste function ! (also notice the extra space character added before Foo - "Foo" vs " Foo" - while not a syntax error this could introduce a logic error - even worse and harder to debug than a syntax error)In conclusion, in my opinion, the Kindle format (at least as produced by O'Relly ?) is not a substitute for the PDF format for technical books.

This is a fantastic book, whether you're new to C# or are an experienced C# developer who wants to deepen your knowledge and understanding of the language and its core libraries. (Note that this book does assume a certain level of general programming experience). The writing style is clear, concise, and logical. The authors do a great job of illustrating each concept with relevant code snippets and examples. LINQPad, the freemium utility developed by the authors, is a very useful companion to the book (and is also quite impressive as a software achievement). For those who commented that the price of this edition is more expensive than previous editions, it's worth noting that this book clocks in at 1,035 pages. Hats off to the Albaharis for producing a phenomenal work of depth and breadth.

I was really enjoying this book, getting back up to speed on C# after 12 years, but every time I tried navigating with bookmarks or highlights my Kindle reader would freeze, then crash. Granted, my Kindle is a Fire, which is horrendously slow, but no other Kindle books I've read on it (MANY) have had any issues whatsoever. Amazon was kind enough to give me a refund (removing it from my library).==========Edit: So I purchased the print version for twice the price, I'm sure it will be worth it ;-)

Seems pretty comprehensive and writing is OK. Pretty much all you can ask for in a tech book.

Paddings between book center and text on pages are too small for such large book thickness,so it is almost not possible to open book enough widely for comfortable reading.

This is probably my favorite reference, I read it cover to cover and it makes perfect sense, and the information is incredibly useful. I constantly find myself referencing this book, which makes it very well worth its asking price.
