There are different books to read during different seasons; I read a lot of travel memoirs in the summer and this one was a masterpiece! Bill’s wife leaves him and he loses his job as an English professor around the same time so he decides to take off alone on a road trip around America following what he calls the “blue highways”, roads that are blue on an atlas or essentially country highways. He avoids all expressways. Along the way he meets a host of interesting characters and documents his conversations with them and discusses the various restaurants where he dines; he determined that the more calendars a diner has, the better the food. Whenever I read during quiet time at the daycare, my students always excitedly ask me what is happening in my book. Unfortunately, they got a bit sick of me telling them that Bill was eating again, although I loved his descriptions of diner grub. His visit to a monastery was my favorite section of the book as he documented his conversation with a monk asking him about why he chose that lifestyle. I have an interest in stepping into other people’s shoes and seeing how people live differently in various communities so I found it fascinating. I think this curiosity is one reason I moved to country; I had never lived in the country before.

I love meeting people and I love going places. I'm the kind who, when out and about on an errand or toward a destination, sees a narrow shady road branching off the highway and wonders what's down that road. Moon's book takes me down those roads, introduces me to people I, too, would like to meet. I've recommended this book to so many people--both after my first reading when it first came out (I gave a copy to my husband's grandmother) and again now. I don't know what they're teaching in literature, writing, and culture classes these days--not to mention U.S. history--but I think this book could easily be fit into any of those courses. Book clubs should read it. I so wished I had someone to read it with so that I could share my thoughts on what I was getting out of it. I shared many passages on FB and others with my best friend (Kindle makes it easy). This is a book to read slowly, savoring the skillful writing, the apt descriptions, the colorful characters, the "philosophizing." I loved this book. Can you tell? I'll read it again and again.

Very gritty blue collar snapshot of America in 1982. Least Heat-Moon needed to get away from home in Missouri where his marriage and career were disintegrating so he took this circular trip around the USA to clear his head and in so doing created one of the great travelogues of all time. He's not visiting glamour spots or drinking destinations of the travel brochures. He's down, lost and confused. He wants to see how real people are living and getting on with life and maybe get a clue about his own place in life. And since he's limited himself to the back roads, the blue-lines on the map, he meets mostly blue collars in the little out of the way places. A delightful plus and surprise to me was he took photo snapshots of the people he met and included them in the book. The man has a photographic mind for detail and dialog which got a little overwhelming at times.

If you love this country, and can put his writings from before 1980 in context with today's social climate,you will love the book. It should be read with an atlas close by or, better yet, Google maps. It is richly rewarding to follow on a map or even aerial photograph exactly where the author travels. The interaction and dialog with fascinating people is rewarding. Much has changed in the almost 40 years since "the drive" was made but this only makes the contrast more poignant. A beautifully crafted book.

I first read this book when it came out in 1981 and I was 41 years old. And I loved it. Since then I've read it at least six times including recently. I am now 77 years old. Each time I read it I see things from a different perspective. It's a beautiful book.

If you think you might want to take an American road trip, buy and read this first. If you have no interest in road trips, buy and read this, and see if you don't change your mind. I've given this book as a gift probably half a dozen times...and been enthusiastically thanked later every time. Maybe I pick the right people to receive it, or maybe this book is universally appealing. If you've read it already, you know what I'm talking about. If you haven't read it, it's not too late. Over thirty years old now, it's as pertinent today as it ever was.

Very well researched, lots of historical facts. Personally I wish it had a little more on the trip itself, but I realize that wasn't his goal. Very different from Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, yet also similar. Both books get bogged down in philosophical matters I don't care about.

I love to read travelogues. This one is about a circular trip around the United States in a van, in the late 1970s (I think, the 70s. Maybe early 80s). There are descriptions of areas that I looked up on Google Earth and was entertained for hours while following these roadways to see what Least Heat-Moon was seeing. The author is an English major -- a professor, I believe -- and writes with an intellectual wittiness that I much appreciate. This particular book is beginning to age and yellow a bit, which makes me feel a little sad, because this book should definitely be reprinted and kept refreshed for more people to read.

Michael Pellet is a former NCAA Division 1 Track and Field athlete, specializing in the Throwing Events. Michael is now a NCAA Division 3 Track and Field Coach, for the throwing events. Prior to coaching at the collegiate level he had been a high school track and field coach, at some of New York State's elite high schools for athletics. While at Schenectady High School in New York, Michael was the head coach for both the men's and women's indoor track and field programs, which saw the Men's side win the conference championship, and produce state athletes in the jumps. Michael was the assistant outdoor coach while at Schenectady, which produce another conference title, as well as state athletes and secure Michael as one of the Section 2 State Team Coaches. Prior to Schnectady, Michael developed a youth program in NYC, which through his unique view and creativity in the sport, found them practicing on the rooftop of the school in which he taught at in New York City. Lastly before his youth program Michael was the throwing coach for the Catholic High School Athletic Association of NY's powerhouse team Fordham Prep. This Text book on construction was very good. I actually bought it to supplement the text book used in a course I am taking and I found it to explain difficult concepts better (like steel construction). I recomend this to any one needing a good text book on construction.

My boyfriend wanted this book sp bad and he really enjoyed reading it and learning from it!

In its present form this book will only be utilized by a limited number of HR consultants with the accounting and finance expertise to both understand and apply the information to client companies with hundreds if not thousands of employees.The Human Resources profession attracts a diverse array of talented professionals. Many HR professionals gain experience via OTJ (on-the-job) supplemented by educational programs by the professional HR society (SHRM; [...] while others completed a BBA in business administration with elective courses in Human Resources.In the Preface of the book, Dr. Biswas notes this diversity of educational background in HR professionals: "the current HR professional has come to this line of work from a whole host of different backgrounds. For those individuals, especially HR professionals tasked with managing compensation and benefit design, I would encourage them to persevere...the time spent will be worth it.Who should buy this book? HR, Accounting and Finance professionals in organizations where the human capital costs represent a significant portion of expenditures of the organization. The content of this book should be utilized in both core and elective courses in BBA programs. SHRM certification programs need to include components of the chapters included in this book. I recently completed my MBA in organizational leadership and marketing. While some of my classes touched on many concepts in HR, it certainly was not my focus. Now in management, I am exposed to the myriad of issues within the organization that require understanding and attention. This book elucidates the numerous issues that affect HR decision at companies of all sizes, explaining them in clear and easy to understand language.The book is truly a book of finance, not a book on leadership or dealing with people, but one of profit per employee, human resource planning, computing incentives for salaried, hourly, and commission based employees, and figuring out bonus plans such as stock award, stock options, and profit sharing.The book also addresses issues related to international employee compensation.Of particular interest to all companies today is the discussion of defined benefit versus defined contribution retirement plans, and the various types of health insurance programs that a company is able to offer.The book is a serious read, and assumes a significant knowledge of the world of corporate finance before you start. The subtitle is "applying finance and accounting principles to global human resource management" and indeed, without a background in finance and accounting, this book will lose you quickly.It would be nice to have some sample problems in the book in the sections on finances, but overall it is a great treatment of a difficult topic and a great one for post-MBA managers looking to understand human resources better.

This book is not just for human resource personnel. Others in a large organisation might find its contents interesting. It describes how to impose some logic and rigour on how to determine compensation for professional employees. Rather than being a black art. The book is directed at US corporations, with frequent reference to the US Generally Accepted Accounting Practises and the IFRS.Some sections just touch on the complexity. I'm thinking about the chapter on expatriate compensation. One overriding principle is that the employee and his family should be revenue neutral on his foreign assignment. Of course, if the employee has a family, then the sheer cost of relocating them to another country can be comparable to the person's salary. This is often the case, if only simply because if the employee is senior enough professionally then he [or she] is likely to be married with children.On page 141 is a table of an example of expatriate compensation, where the person moves from New Jersey to Paris. One line item is hardship premium. Realistically, this value is zero for this move. But if the person is heading to Karachi or Ulan Bator, a hardship premium might indeed be well deserved. Related to that is a line item for a danger premium. Here, the Karachi example would be germane. Where an American might well face terrorism risks.The text also has a long discussion of retirement plans and how these are financed. The accounting intricacies are summarised. But you get a feel for the underlying assumptions of how asset classes are expected to grow over the years and how this affects the overall value of a retirement plan.

This collection is essential reading for all FO'B fans, as I was meself at a time when it was neither profitable nor popular. The Conrad sequence alone is worth the price of admission.But it is marred by some of the worst footnotes ever seen. FO'B might say they were lathered on as with a signwriting brush, clearly the work of a madman, ably assisted by that bright slip of a girl out of the upper fifth, a touch on the literal-minded side. There are footnotes for practically anything that starts with a capital letter, earnestly telling us who e.g. St Augustine, James Joyce, Verdi, Shakespeare, and Hitler are. The whole apparatus is worthy of a Cruiksheen Lawn column, or several conflicting pseudomymous letters to the Irish Times, if indeed it isn't already some ghostly joke from beyant the grave of Flann O'Brien the same man, along the lines of the de Selby footnotes in The Third Policeman, which can be read separately as an independent story. But FO'B would be mightily amused to read that by the Knights he means the Knights Templar, when any gobsheen knows anny time he talks about Knights it is about those earnest gentlement the Knights of St Columbanus with their no doubt unintended paramilitary overtones. Similarly Wagner, Keats, Wordsworth, Winston Churchill, Karl Marx, Charles Dickens ('famous'), 'Hard Times', Plato, Luther, Thomas Acquinas, Kruschev, Einstein, Judas Iscariot, JFK, Sherlock Holmes, de Gaulle, John the Baptist, 'the Boche', and friendly societies do not need to be footnoted at all. Harold Wilson is footnoted at least twice (with and without pipe); ditto James Joyce, T.S. Eliot, etc.; ditto 'nom de guerre', which is rather uselessly translated literally rather than giving its actual usage, as are 'croix de guerre' and several other alien expressions. 'A tune from Rose Marie' obviously refers to the (Rudi) Friml-Stothart-Harbach-Hammerstein musical/operetta, filmed thrice within 28 years and all but inescapable in those years, not to whatever obscure American singer pops up first in Google. 'P.P.' means Parish Priest, as seen outside any RC church, and used by FO'B several times in 'The Dalkey Archive', not some non-existent abbreviation for the Pope. There is no 'perhaps' about the references to Damon Runyon, Ezra Read, Simon Stylites, etc. Is Verdi really best known for 'Aida'? 'The Spectator' was founded in 1828, not 1928. The 'dactyl, as in Kennedy' can only refer to 'Slattery', not the whole of 'Slattery's Sago Saga'. And so on.And the index is typeset on a system unknown to typographical science, making it unusable.

Our child isn't "explosive" but just way harder to get to do stuff than some - i.e. transition from bed to up, from TV to homework, from friend's house to car, etc. This book really helps in explaining those behaviors so they make sense and giving techniques to avoid the threats and yelling that I hate to say was getting pretty common in our house. Maybe better title: "The Explosive Parent; A New Approach for Understanding and Dealing With the Strange Person You Become sometimes when Dealing With Your Child."

I will admit it... my first 2 kids were very easy. So easy, in fact that I was lulled into a false sense of confidence about this parenting thing. I might even have to admit that I got a bit smug and yes...it's true...Judge-y. Yep. I would see parents with a child who was screaming and out of control and think something along the lines of "They only need to be consistent and set firm boundaries and then their little monster will become docile and compliant like my amazing kids..." So you have probably heard of the great scripture, "Judge not, lest ye be judged." well...all I can say is that Yikes. God is listening and God has a sense of humor. Yeah...I'm living that scripture out in a real world way with child #3. Trust me...in my mind I have apologized to every stranger I ever stood in arrogant judgement of...a million times over. I wish I could write them encouraging notes and tell them I know they have probably tried every trick in the book and to please know that their horribly behaved child is NOT a reflection of them and poor parenting (as I have eaten so much crow about!!!). I have apologized in person to the parents I know in real life for thinking they might have been missing the "magic touch" to tame their wild beast. I am now the weary, battle-scarred and infinitely more humble mom to one such wild beast...errrr rather, "explosive child."Our daughter's OT suggested this book and I'm pretty sure I sounded like really enthusiastic parishioner during a great sermon because I found myself blurting out "YES!!" "That's exactly right!" and "Amen!!" a few times...and I suddenly felt understood and human again. But, most importantly, I understood my little explosive child much better and began to learn ways to avoid her going into VAPOR LOCK and being "unreachable" and volatile.Does she still throw humiliating tantrums without regard to where we are or who might witness it? Yes. Am I still mortified in those moments and begging God to spontaneously combust me? Yes. Will that ever change...? I doubt it. lol But we are doing better now that I have a more solid understanding of her psychology and how to work with it.If you are looking at this book, perhaps it is because someone in your life (a doctor, OT, Therapist, friend, or fellow parent of an explosive child) has recommended it, so please know I am praying for you! lol I do...I pray for parents everywhere who have a child like this because it is really the hardest thing I have ever undertaken as a parent!! Please know you are not alone....and as a reformed judger, I can only say I am so so so sorry. I never knew!!! But I am humbled and wiser now...and still wondering if spontaneous combustion could save me from some of the more embarrassing locales of explosions.... :-)

At first the premise of this book is a little hard to take in, but once you do, it is a god send. It took me 2 readings to finally understand, believe, and then commit to the idea. Once I started using "Plan B" with my teen age daughter everything began to change, for the better.

I got this book two years ago for my 3 year old girl. She was frustrated, I was frustrated, and she had 2 younger siblings. We needed change. This book changed our lives. I took every word to heart. Wrote down the problems and came up with a strategy. Focused on one behavior at a time. It took months of hard work to see progress but one skill at a time has added up to a strong and amazing straight A Kindergartener who is thriving. I know her better than my other kids because of the journey we had to go threw together. The parent training I received from implementing the teachings in this book has made life so much easier for my other kids because whatever comes up, this mom has a plan. I realized today when referring this to a friend today just how far we have come. I had forgotten how hard things once more. And as I wathed her kid struggle like mine used to I couldn't help but think, that kid has amazing potential once his determination is pointed in the right direction. Yours can too. Read the book and study it like a college course. Your life and children's lives will change. Having a plan gives up hope. This is your plan.

Lots of insightful advice, but my kid got REALLY MAD when she found it on my nightstand.
