Pros...I learned a few tips I did not already know about drawing. It was short, quick and easy to read. The repeditivness in the examples made it easy not to forget the advice that was given.Cons...The book was short for the price paid. Most of the pages were just photographs with maybe a sentance or two describing what is in the picture. Some of the pages repeaded the same advice over and over and over and over and over and over and over which made the book even shorter. Most of the tips could be found on youtube for free, or by google or yahoo or anything that doesn't cost.Reasons for rating...I took away one star because the price alone.I took away a star because not only did the book repeat itself a lot, but there were a lot of common spelling errors, grammar mistakes, and tip advice that did not line up with other tip advice. This book was not well put together.I took away another star because it was a waste of my time that I can not get back and a waste of money. The reason I gave it one star because it did actually give me a few tips I took with me and will always use. (Not worth $9, but at least I got something from it.)I gave a star because the book was as it states it is. For anyone who knows nothing about drawing, this is a great starter book. Maybe invest in one that costs a bit more with a lot of knowledge to take in. But for those who need to be reminded of the same thing in the same way, but with a different example, then this is the book for you.Cut the price in half and I would add one star to my rating if that makes any difference.

This book is a good primer for beginners as well as refresher for experienced artists. Using a grid system, the author provides a good technique to complete a portrait from a reference such as a photo.

Clear and easy to follow, and the writing is engaging. The sample drawings in it are quite beautiful. A thoroughly enjoyable way to learn and/or enhance drawing skills!

Tailored for me. It is a beginner book. Being a novice what do I know? Easy to follow and technique. Im better for it. The author explained the process well was encouraging. Like Alot of interests you get better as you practice practice.

An excellent, easy to follow book on learning how to sketch.

It seems like there are some good techniques in here, but all in all I didn't personally get a ton out of it

I am a newcomer to drawing, and especially to attempting portraiture. This was helpful, although the grid approach did take a little work. That said, I am glad I brought this book.

Good read, easy examples drawn my daughter is glad i bought it.

There's more to goodness than keeping the Commandments: you've got to cultivate virtue, too, so that you please God in what you do not merely in what you don't do. In these pages, you'll learn countless ways to grow in such virtue. The wise Msgr. Romano Guardini, a German priest hailed by Pope Benedict XVI as "a great figure" who "aspired to the truth of God and to the truth of man," leads you from a consideration of virtue in itself to a discussion of each of the key virtues that will make you holy and lead you to God. Here you'll learn how to begin practicing the virtues and make them part of your daily routine. You'll also learn about: Envy, the hidden sin, even in the spiritually mature: how to fight it Courtesy: how good manners are spiritually vital to souls "What is truth?" The surprising answer to Pilate's question will transform you Patience: it's the prerequisite for all moral growth, and only the morally strong attain it Orderliness: not a moral virtue in itself, but lack of it may cost your soul Why a sense of humor is so important even to your spiritual health The strange contradiction in blaming God for the evil in the world Belief in "progress": in our day it can be a form of idolatry The tyranny of justice: why so many justice movements turn unjust (knowing this is the key to our future as a society) Asceticism: it's not just for monks without it, you may not be saved! Trashy movies: there's spiritual danger even in the ones that don't obviously glorify sin Discover why noise weakens the soul, and how silence is balm for your spiritual life Plus: many other topics to help you grow in the virtues that lead you to God!

This is not a book for the person looking for a light pass over of the virtues. I could only read one chapter at a time, because it confronted me with much to contemplate. I do recommend it highly though for those who want to confront their shortcomings but especially for those who want a pathway out of the endless cycle of sins. There are no more excuses in the confessional!

This book was beautiful! I am so glad I found it. I can't wait to get my hands on more work by the author. I actually liked that it wasn't about the 7 virtues I am used to seeing. Fr. Guardini brings a philosophical approach to his writing that reminded me of such authors like C. S. Lewis and Peter Kreeft. Each chapter touches on a necessary virtue to cultivate in our lives, explaining what it is, why it is difficult to attain this virtue in this day and age, and finally explains in what way God shows forth this virtue by His actions. I just finished it today, and I want to immediately read it again!

This is a beautiful book. Romano Guardini was an important theologian prior to the second Vatican Council, but he also wrote wonderful books of practical theology. This is such a book. He explores many virtues including my favorites: courage, reverence and gratitude. He defines them, explains them, and references them to our relationship to God and God's relationship to us. Some of his reflections are quite profound; all of his reflections are beautifully written. Fr. Guardini was an important influence on Joseph Ratzinger. Sometimes as I was reading this book, I could hear Joseph Ratzinger as well. This is a good book to pray with and with which to examine one's conscience. If you don't know Romano Guardini - this is a great way to be introduced.

Call Webster, it’s a new word! But seriously, Fr. Guardini does an excellent job of exploring the virtues we often politicize and gives them insightful definition. Liberals speak of “acceptance”, Fr. Guardini shows what it really looks like. Conservatives speak of “loyalty”, it gets the same treatment. “Justice”...well who doesn’t like that and come to contradictory conclusions about it anyway? Fr Guardini’s writing is clear as it is deep, and challenges while it comforts. Buy it-the buzzwords won’t catch you anymore!

Guardini is a sadly neglected moral theologian who apart from Josef Pieper would be hard to better in the last 100 years. His works besides being of the most important subjects possible for human consideration are written in perhaps the clearest possible way for everyone to understand.I therefore recommend them to every one.

If I had a little more money, I would buy a box of these and give a copy to everyone I know. A beautiful, thought-provoking, life-transforming book.

Through the text emerges the image of a modest, honest and wise man of faith who has experienced life and extracted pearls of wisdom that he shares with his readers. The writing is simple yet powerful - the hallmark of a great thinker who has grasped the essence of a things. As a spiritual guide this book is as essential as "Spiritual Combat" by Scupoli and "Introduction to the devout life" by de Sales but more accessible, given its contemporary language. This is a life-long companion I will carry with me to nurture my soul and to help me work towards purity.

This is the best money I've spent on a book in a long time. Clear, insightful, easy to read but thoughtful and insightful. I have been delighted to spend time with this author. I hope to read more of his work.

Review

“An original, witty piece of celibate chick lit. Baker is a fish-out-of-water Mormon NYU grad who loses 80 pounds, tries acting and stand-up comedy and, as you learn in the acknowledgments, ends up chummy with Elizabeth Swados and Ira Glass. She has a genuine but funny take on faith.”—The Boston Globe   “If I told you that Elna Baker had written a frank and self-deprecating memoir about dating which is unlike any other frank and self-deprecating memoir about dating, you probably would not believe me. However, Baker is a Mormon. A peachy, astute, witty 27-year-old Mormon who has never had sex.”—Louise France, The Observer (England)   “A funny, touching story about coming to the big city, where she loses the certainty of her beliefs, if not her way.”—Sherryl Connelly, New York Daily News   "A wickedly funny debut. Baker is both self-absorbed and generous, whip-smart and naïve; she apologizes for none of it."—People

Really enjoyable book -- funny, and Baker has a nice confessional style. Really interesting glimpses into the psychology of a liberal Mormon, the Mormon singles culture, the anguish of wanting to be thin, the struggle to carve an identity in your 20's. I highly recommend this, with a few caveats.I confess I didn't read this in one sitting, or even one year. I gave up on it after about 40 pages last year, but revisited it this year, got past a boring bit, and devoured it in three days. The book is brilliant at moments, but it's also peppered with flat scenes that make you wonder, why would Baker think this was important enough to tell us? For example, she frequently described bad jokes she made, that didn't work, or that made a conversation awkward, and while that gives us a sense of her personality, after a certain point, I've had enough. They're the kind of things that I can imagine working well in a stand-up routine, read out loud, but just aren't compelling in a book.I think the title is unfortunate -- it's wordy and awkward, and the most interesting scenes and observations are not from the dances. Baker's annual visits to the dance strike me as a forced literary device, rather than something that was really important to her or interesting for her readers.

This was a fun read...but some things in it disturbed me. First the good: it's very funny. I laughed out loud a lot. She's a great writer. Very likeable. I really enjoyed the book. The bad: I was very disturbed by how she lost the weight in the book and it seemed the author had no qualms about it. She starved herself obsessing over every speck of food and I felt really bad for her. But there was no discussion about the toll this took on her, but honestly I felt the real story was right there...in the fact that she had the self control to lose 100 pounds through extreme starvation and diet pills. I felt sorry for her. I found that disturbing. I hope she is over struggling with dieting and cares more about health than weight now.

This book was recommended by a colleague who said he stayed up all night reading the book until he finished it. I cannot fathom what he found so interesting or enthralling, my apologies to the author. The book does contain some very interesting and funny parts but overall I had trouble relating to the protagonist and her problem reconciling her Mormon religion with her choice of men she dated. She also recounts her weight problem, which is something most of us can relate to at some time in our life.I think her weight was a shield against the outside the world and her Mormon faith comforted her when her weight frustrated her. But with the change in weight, our girl also changes her view of Mormons and others. If you are a person struggling with your faith, this book may validate your struggle. I would much rather read more about Baker's jobs (funny story about working at FAO Schwartz) in the Big Apple than her problems trying to remain a good Mormon while trying to date boys. Flashes of brilliance but overall not worth sacrificing a good night's sleep.

As an independent Mormon girl living in New York City, Elna Baker is a mass of contradictions. Yet she tackles her quirks and foibles with such humor that I laughed throughout the entire book. There were awkward stories of dating mishaps, a comically awful story of working as a doll "adoption agent" at FAO Schwarz, and a very poignant story of falling in love with an atheist. This was the most honest and lively faithful Mormon memoirs I have read to date. The author was honest enough to acknowledge the issues within her religion but also managed to communicate her enormous love for her Mormon family. On some level I can identify with Elna Baker - I was born into a faithful Mormon family. I too struggled to balance my independence and dreams with the rigid expectations of my religion. Elna was able to tackle the issue with a humor that I lacked. But irregardless of my own background, I do think this is a book that would resonate with most people, as the underlying story is about a girl trying to find her place in the world. My only issue with the book is that there wasn't much in the way of resolution. The author is confused at the beginning and confused at the end. But as the in-between parts are so fun and lively, this is only a minor fault.

This is an invaluable book for learning about asexuality. It's very easy to feel confusion about human sexuality whether it's your own or someone else. It can feel awkward or indecent to discuss openly and so valid differences never really get addressed. This is especially the case if it's an orientation that rarely gets acknowledged to boot. This book introduces the basics of asexuality and is split into six categories outside the introduction: Asexuality 101, Asexual Experiences, The Many Myths of Asexuality, If You're Asexual (or Think You Might Be), If Someone You Know Is Asexual (or Might Be), and Other Resources. It covers a lot of ground without getting too detailed for someone just learning about it. Keep in mind this book assumes that the reader has a basic familiarity with LGBT issues and it isn't afraid to be frank in its discussion about sex. Some information is repeated throughout the book since it's written with the idea that someone will go to whichever chapter bears most relevance to them first, so you don't absolutely have to go from cover to cover. My one minor critique is that I would have liked it to go into even more depth on sex repulsion, sex positivity, what those terms do and don't mean, and just how this can effect an asexual person specifically. Granted, this is supposed to be an introduction and it touches briefly on these subjects, so I don't know how fair a critique about wanting more details out of an introductory book is.I also would have liked more examples of exclusively good elements to being asexual if that makes sense. This is done to some degree with references to asexual characters in media and famous people who identify as asexual, which were welcome additions to see. However, I think it's important to note that the fact that this book addresses the "negative" side to being ace is because disparaging remarks about asexuality or plain old misunderstandings are a genuine thing asexual people face. It's important to bear in mind that The Invisible Orientation goes out of its way to empower an asexual individual no matter what the scenario is and especially the more difficult ones, however. The chapter "Other Resources" also provides some excellent resources to connect with with other asexual people and their allies.I think this book will answer more questions than not and is written in an understanding and compassionate way. Highly recommended for anyone who is struggling with being asexual, someone who knows someone who is struggling with it, and anyone who simply wants to broaden their understanding of these issues. I hope more books on asexuality and asexual experiences will follow both from this author and from others.

Just realized I was an asexual but never knew there was even such a thing. My doctor recommended this book. It has loads of information along with an index of terms, definitions and websites. You will learn a lot from this book if you are asexual, a parent of friend of an ace or just wondering what it is all about.

I am asexual, and when I was first figuring out my orientation, I searched high and low to find a nonfiction title with information a little more authoritative than the random Reddit posts and Wikipedia articles and YouTube videos I found describing my newfound identity. This is pretty much the only book out there. But don't be discouraged! It's a good first primer for anyone new to asexuality, whether they identify that way or know someone else who does. It covers the basics but also talks about more of the details for those who are interested in more. It answers questions. It provides resources. It has a TOC and an index, and it includes notes and references to scientific studies when applicable. And it's written by someone who self-identifies as asexual, so that's also a point in its favor.I'm a leader for an asexual group, and I come across many people who are new to asexuality either because they're still figuring out their own orientation or because they're outside the ace community but they've heard about asexuality and need more and better information about it. This is the book I recommend to all of them.

Interesting premise and the author is clearly knowledgeable about the subject. That said, this book needs an editor. I felt like it was too long and kept up with examples and commentary when the main point had been made repeatedly. If you don't like classifying people you will get confused and the very granular level at which this describes people's orientations. This is important work and I hope Ms. Decker continues to write on the subject as this orientation becomes more understood.

I used to introduce myself, when someone inquired, whichwas not often as "Bisexual by nature, Asexual by choice, becuse, although in my youth I had experimented with the various possibilities, I'm currently in my late 50's and never had on orgasm. This book is teaching me that it ISN'T something to hide away, it's just how I am. (I am also convinced that my late father passed this one down to me, along with several other genetic traits.) But that's okay, it's all me, and maybe, just maybe, I' m not needing to fix it. I really like that idea.

I think I’m going to have to make this one mandatory reading for the important people in my life. Despite some repetition, particularly through the section on the asexual community’s experience trying to integrate into existing queer spaces, it’s still pretty comprehensive in its discussion of what asexuality is and how allies can support people with that identity.

This book was very informational for someone like myself seeking guidance on being in a relationship with someone asexual. People dismiss this and say it doesn't exist; but, believe me, it does. I was able to identify with a lot of it and I'm grateful the book was such an easy read.

This was a great intro to asexuality, what it is, its relation to the LGBTQ community, and most importantly, the way asexual people see themselves and how others see them. Its important to realize asexuality is just that, a sexuality just as valid as any other and this book is excellent at making this point.

Oblation: Meditations on St. Benedict's Rule

Review

I first read Oblation: Mediations on St. Benedict’s Rule by RachelSrubas wedged into a crowded Greyhound bus on a rainy Easter Sunday afternoon.Though that may not have been the ideal setting for a good spiritual read (norprobably where the author anticipated it would be read), it was actually quitelovely. It is advantageous, when reading this text, to have time to look offand think, and to be surrounded by very human faces about which to ponder. Cometo think of it, that may be exactly what the author intended. In this small volume Srubas presents the reader with the resuits of her“scriptio divina”: poem-meditations on most of the chapters of the Rule ofBenedict. She calls it, in the preface, “a cliary of Benedictine prayers”composed in response to her reading of the Rule. The “oblation” of the titlerefers not to the liturgical act of oblation (though Srubas is an oblate of theBenedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration in Tucson and a Presbyterian clergy.woman) but to her concept of these prayers as an offering to God and to thewider Christian community. A preface and introduction explain both the writer’spersonal history and the process through which the book came to be. Eachreflection roots itself in a chapter from the Rule, specifically a verse or twofrom Patrick Barry’s translation. Understandably some chapters are combined(e.g., 23.30 on the penal code) and some are expanded (each step of humilitymerits its own poem). The book possesses several strengths. Srubas’ idea of writing as a valuabletool in engaging with sacred texts could easily be a jumping-off place formonastic ongoing formation committees, oblate groups, or parish adult educationprograms. Her articulation that her poems are “responses to” the Rule, not“translations of,” is appreciated for its respect for Benedict’s text and thetradition of scholarly interpretation. And, most importantly, some of the poems hit those truths about how God is, andhow we do—or do not—respond. Her reflection on chapter 43, “Lateness for theWork of God or in the Refectory,” packs a delicious moment of self-recognitionfor most of us. I think: A singular, demanding note, the bell of disciplined devotion, intervenes in the day. Didn’t I already pray? What more is there to say, so soon? As poetry, the pieces are somewhat uneven, and not all may ring true toexperiences of Benedictine life. But, of course, they’re not meant to. They areone person’s meditations. One of the gifts of the text may be to drive thereader to pick up pencil and paper and name her or his response to theparticular chapter, especially if it’s significantly different from the author’s.So whether one picks up Oblation: Meditations on St. Benedzct’s Rule ona Greyhound bus or in a choir stall, in solitude or the company of others, itis a worthwhile endeavor. The book is yet another vehicle on the ever-expandinglandscape of ways to encounter the Rule of Benedict. Susan Quaintance, O.S.B., St. Seholastica Monastery, Chicago, IL This book is by Rachel Srubas, Presbyterian clergywoman, wife and Benedictine oblate, who embodies the ecumenism common to the Benedictine family. While personal, her prayer reflections also connect the Rule of St.Benedict to familiar experiences to both oblates and other readers. Srubas says that her writing talent has been nurtured and celebrated for years by the Arizona Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration with whom she is affiliated. Picking up on the Benedictine practice of praying with Scripture known as lectio divina or "divine reading," Srubas calls her reflections scriptio divina or "divine writing." Inspired by the Rule that in its time wedded ancient ideals to contemporary practices, Srubas allows both the Holy Spirit and Benedict's spirit to infuse her words. "Every one of the prayers is an oblation, an offering to God," she writes. Accompanying each prayer is an excerpt from the section of the Rule that was its inspiration. Readers unfamiliar with that book still may find themselves intrigued by such engaging prayer titles as "Go Home Hungry," "Two-footed and Striving," "I, Too, Belong" and "Each Sacramental Thing." For those who know the Rule, these reflections permit the familiar words to take on a different and perhaps deeper luster. "All guests who present themselves are to be welcomed as Christ," St. Benedict urges those who would follow him. Both Brother Benet and Ms. Srubas offer just such a warm welcome to everyone who may be curious about this1,400 year-old tradition. St. Anthony's Messanger November 1, 2006tThis tiny book is a collection of prayers, in the form of poems, based on the rule of St. Benedict, whose 1500-year-old guide to a faithful life is used today in a variety of prayer communities. The author, Presbyterian minister Rachel Srubas, is an oblate-a member of the community of the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration-who considers Benedict's teachings to be "the practical wisdom of the Christian gospel-" Srubas introduces us to contemplative prayer. Already a practitioner of lectio divina, which she calls "listening to the gospel with the ears of the heart," she was led to lectio scriptio, the writing of prayers. The strength of these prayers is in their everyday-ness, in their use of images taken from the common objects and struggles we all confront. The poems are both adventuresome and quieting as they focus on the smallest moments of our humanity and life of the spirit. As poetry these pieces are the work of an accomplished, compelling voice. They draw from spiritual hunger, joy, discipline and silence. Oblation is also the remarkable story of a spiritual journey. As such it is a welcome traveling companion for solitary personal reflections or for small groups which are engaged in a communal walk of faith. This tiny book of prayers is a welcome traveling companion for groups and individuals engaged in a walk of faith. Sally Curd, a member of Southside Presbyterian Church, Tucson, Ariz. October 1, 2006Skillfully combining images that are personal and universal, practical and mystical sometimes whimsical, Rachel Srubas offers a unique perspective on the Rule of Benedict. By training she is writer, poet and pastor, a mix that accords well with Benedictine tradition and spirituality. In a lively and perceptive introduction, she describes how her practice of Scriptio Divina (sacred writing) is an adaptation of the ancient monastic practice of Lectio Divina (sacred reading). Accustomed to using this writing practice for meditation on Scripture texts, when she encountered the Rule Benedict wrote 1500 years ago, she used the same method. The 73 Benedictine prayer-poems in this slim book are the fruit of these reflections, her "Oblation" (offering) to others who wish to savor the wisdom in that ancient text. This is a book to which thoughtful readers will want to return again and again. Sr. Lenora Black, OSB Spirit&Life March 20, 2006 These two books deserve dual consideration. Both issued by Paraclete, they make a powerful case for the revival of one of the less well known monastic traditions of the West, the "oblates," who, while remaining laypeople in a lay life, are affiliated with a monastic house by their adherence to some of the basic tenets of the Benedictine rule. Tvedten (director, Oblates, Blue Cloud Abbey, SD) explains the history of Benedictine monasticism simply but in some detail as well as the history of oblates and their place in contemporary monastic houses, both Catholic and non-Catholic Benedictine. Srubas, herself both a Benedictine oblate and a Presbyterian clergywoman, has written a collection of poem-like prayers and meditations directed at oblates and inspired by the Benedictine rule. These volumes cast fresh light on a little-known practice and should interest many readers. For most collections. Graham Christian Library Journal January 20, 2006"Srubas, herself both a Benedictine oblate and a Presbyterian clergywoman, has written a collection of poemlike prayers and meditations directed at oblates and inspired by the Benedictine rule. Interesting application relating today's culture to Benedictine's rule of life. Beautifully written and insightful.

Beautiful verses, beautiful thoughts, beautiful meditations. I loved this.

Awesome. It is a must read. It is very easy to read and spiritually moving.

Benedictine spirituality is experiencing a resurgence in the world at this time. One manifestation of this resurgence is a growing number of articulate women are writing and are being heard. Some of the best writers are not vowed monastics. Beverly Lanzetta, Kathleen Norris, Norvene Vest, Esther deWaal, and Angeles Arrien come to mind as true monastics of the heart. Now in our midst is a startlingly fresh poet/monastic: Benedictine Oblate Rachel Srubas. Srubas, who is a married Presbyterian clergywoman, uses the practice of lectio divina to present to us reflections on the Rule of Benedict which are raw, real, and riveting. When you pick up this book, read Srubas' meditations aloud and slowly---to yourself and/or to another person. Her responses to the Rule are sure to reach you in a sensitive, visceral place. Turbulent as times are today, Srubas' words carry me the way a mountain stream burbles, sparkles, and plays over hard, slippery stone. Srubas' reflections feel bathed in God's sunlight. They dance and bring me home to the Source of Life.
