Review

“JG & Shabby Chic are the original trailblazers of lovers of anything with ‘authentic soul.’ My soul sisters love bright red and turquoise while I love powder blue and pale pink. They love rockabilly and I love a sad country song. But in our hearts we are the same, we design from our dreams and always stay true to our visions. I couldn't love these girls any more if they were my true sisters.” (Rachel Ashwell, creator of the Shabby Chic brand)"Junk Gypsy is a lifestyle—totally Texas and totally fun." —Lone Star Literary

What an amazing and inspiring story. This book is more than just junk (although it has a glorious amount of that,) but it is a story of family. The Sike's family are amazing people that you think could only exist in fairy tales. Mama and Daddy Sikes sent there daughters off to University with the expectation that they would happily enter corporate America, but the sisters souls were restless. They knew this was not their passion and left their secure futures to pursue their dreams. They knew they had a gypsy spirit and bringing life back to old and discarded items was their mission. They do it with grace, God, grit and a whole lot of glitter! This book will inspire even non junk gypsies to follow their arrow and pursue what they love!

I have broken a cardinal rule! Yes, it's true. I have dogeared a page in a book. I have dogeared, highlighted, written in the margins, circled quotes, underlined, and I am on my way back through for a second go. I LOVE BOOKS!!! They are amazing. They take us to a world where we didn't even realize we needed to go. I have never before dogeared a page in a book. That's the thing. This isn't just a book. It's life! It's joy, adventure, imagination, happiness, whimsy, laughter...it's life! Amie and Jolie are an inspiration. You think you can't live your dream? You think you have to live a life of "shoulds"? The Junk Gypsy girls are here to tell you that anything and everything is possible. Their story will make you laugh, cry, and get up off your DIY butt. Need a fire lit in the belly of the beast? This will do it. I would write more, but I have to go paint a chandelier turquoise and add some pearls. Join me?

I love love LOVE this book and already bought four extra copies for Christmas presents and guest room nightstand. Lighthearted, uplifting, and full of fantastic ideas and step by step DIYs for making your own creative dreams a reality. Can't stop looking at the rich images. One beautiful page after another.

Holy JuNkiNg goodness!!! This book is so full inspiration for every person on the planet! The photos in the book are incredible and the stories from the Sikes sisters are just over the top wonderful. Full of tips and tricks to paint and upcycle old items, you'll want to get to the nearest garage sale in a jiffy!!

I've been a Junk Gypsy customer for lots of years now, from the days of a tent store twice a year and a warehouse sale once or maybe twice a year to watching a dream unfold that is now the Junk Gypsy Headquarters. These girls and their family are a dreamer's #goals, they don't just take what comes at them for opportunity, but they stay true to themselves and the brand they have created in favor of someone or something that might compromise for the sake of "fame". They are a grassroots campaign for the dreamer in all of us, knowing when to work hard and when to throw glitter in the air and celebrate. The book is a look into the story that is Junk Gypsy, wonder and wander perfectly capture their story, sometimes you know right where you're going, sometimes you wander where you might end up and sometimes you wonder what could be. Deep in all of us, wonder and wander lies, thank you Amie and Jolie for putting it to inspiring word coupled with beautiful pictures. The Junk Gypsy Book will inspire you stay true to you while chasing your own dreams and throw glitter in the air along the way!

Beautiful book, beautiful stories, and beautiful people in a junk lovin' world! So much inspiration from two ladies who made their dream come true and make us all believe that the same can happen for us! Their's is a chippy, peely, glittery world and I loved being a part of it as I read through every page. Buy it!

Absolutely LOVE Junk Gypsy and Amie and Jolie's story! It could be my story too had I not been so young and dumb. But I love the shabby chic designs and will certainly will learn a lot from this book. They inspire me! I love junking, I love antiques and flea markets, so this is for me! It's for you too, if you love the same thing! Check it out....you will be so glad you did! <3

Ok, so there is a lot about these sisters and their journey in this book, but it still is fun eye candy. There are a few project instructions, but this book is more about an attitude. I like to just look at this book to see things I might have missed on tv. The chippy, peely junk with some glitter thrown in (or on) is just pure fun! I like having this book on the coffee table for a bright spot in the day.

I've been traveling solo throughout the third-world for 25 years and nearly always carry a LP book. I've never used another other than LP because LP has always proven to be more than adequate. This one on Bangladesh is admittedly abit skimpy--but again--adequate. The maps for individual towns and cities are--as usual--excellant--as is the glossary and language section.Bangladesh is a confounding and complicated country to survive in let alone describe--a world of chaos and madness-- The Bangla script is impossible and God, throughout time, for some reason, has cursed its people with every plague and catastrophe imaginable. It is a wonder they still survive--a testament to the human will to live no matter how dire the circumstances. For the experienced backpacker, the person who survives on wits and intuition--the only kind that should attempt Bangladesh-- this book will nicely suffice. It is short, concise and easy to pack. When scrambling amongst the hordes you will have no time to sit down and read an epistle of a guide book--you will not even have time to sit down. Read the epistles before you leave home. Take out LP when you finally hit the streets. For the rest--Bangladesh is alot to bite off and chew--consider confining the majority of your travel to India--or simply read about it at home.DH Koester--"And There I Was" And There I Was Volume IX: A Backpacking Adventure in India

This travel guide is possibly the worst one that Lonely Planet has ever produced. Apparently, the previous edition was a lot better, and since hotel and other such listings change more frequently than any publisher could keep up with anyway, it may be advisable to search out the earlier edition for its purported superior coverage of actual sites within the country. The main problem is not that huge portions of the guide are out of date (inevitable due to publishing deadlines and due to the quick pace of change in South Asia), but that they were never correct to begin with. Maps are wrong in every possible sense: topologically; geometrically (positionally and locationally as well as in terms of actual distances); inconsistent scale; incorrect orientation, etc. Also, major streets are unlabeled in many cases, but this is a somewhat moot point as there are hardly any street signs in Bangladesh, and as most streets do not form a grid pattern that is easily followed. For this reason, it would have been helpful to supply dual labeling in Bangla (several competitors do this for most of their maps). That would make it easier to question the locals, who rarely speak or read English.I also personally find LP maps in general to be too difficult to use except when under strong lighting with a magnifying glass, or in a hotel room. Usually we are using the map while walking, in a moving vehicle, under poor lighting. The cross-referencing scheme and miniscule typeface are of no help there! Rough Guide and Moon have the right approach to legible maps that can be used under adverse conditions (Footprints are OK and sometimes very good, but are rarely to scale).Everyone that I encountered in my one month in the country complained about this guide; not the least the locals, many of who were interviewed by the LP writer but ignored when the final edition was published. The only thing this guide has going for it is that it has accurate train connections (bus connections are a joke in the country and would be impossible to write up accurately; find a local and ask them where to go). Bus timings are also accurate; though some are now faster due to a few improved roads and some new bridges where ferries were once required.Descriptions and directions for most of the major archeaological sites (which are on a par with the best that I have seen in Latin America and Southeast Asia, in spite of being relatively unknown), are not adequate and are in some cases quite wrong. But it is very cheap to hire a local guide for a day or more in each region (I mixed this approach with 100% independent travel, and it worked out quite well). Just don't depend on this guide as an aid for independent travel; think of it as an armchair companion to a semi-organised tour.As one example of a deliberate omission (as evidenced by an interview with local tours and hotels), the one and only hotel that is close to the Dhaka airport was not included, even though it has many flexible pricing options even for transit passengers (the airport itself has few if any facilities) and even provides a free airport shuttle. This omission unfortunately pushes one towards the expensive Gulshan district upon arrival, which is a bit far and also not near any major sites in the capital (my detailed reports will be submitted to Lonely Planet's forum later on, and don't really belong in a book review). That said, this was the best vacation of my life; mostly because the people of Bangladesh are the friendliest and most open I have ever encountered (and that is saying a lot). I felt like I was already home, everywhere I went. This is in fact a slogan of the country. It is a beautiful and lush country besides, even though mostly flat (except for the unbelievably gorgeous tea and pineapple plantations in the northeastern region of the country), but I think the guide could have done a better job of describing the culture and making a case for why one should visit the country. It is unfortunate that there are currently no other travel guides to Bangladesh. Competition seems to improve most guides, and this pertains to ALL of the publishers. Bradt used to publish a guide but never bothered to update theirs since the 1992 edition. I doubt there's much of a market though, as I only encountered a small handful of tourists during my entire month in the country. Even more reason to visit now, before it is "discovered".

"Lonely Planet's" guide to Bangladesh is pretty thin --less than 200 pages -- for a country with a population of 150 million. Well, there's a reason for that. Bangladesh is hardly a tourist paradise.Dhaka is probably the most crowded city in the world and, in fact, the biggest attraction of the city is the traffic -- which is horrendous. The numbers of rickshas is astonishing; they line up eight-across on some streets all jockeying for position with three-wheelers, cars, trucks, buses, hand-pulled carts, and the occasional herd of goats. Dhaka is worth visiting just for a ricksha ride and traffic jams that are simply unbelievable. The country is pretty outside Dhaka: emerald green rice paddies, palm trees, and innumerable little villages. The city of Cox's Bazaar is the honeymooner's capital of Bangladesh. The beach here is advertised as the longest and widest in the world. What interested me was the fact that of thousands of people on the beach only a few boys were actually in bathing attire and in the water. Women may dip their toes in the surf but they don't dress for the occasion. The all-covering Shawar Camise with head-scarf is de riguer as female beachware -- as it is for everyplace else.Despite a lack of major attractions, Bangladesh is not a bad place to visit and you won't encounter crowds of foreign tourists. Maybe you won't encounter any. "Lonely Planet" covers the country in good detail including history, culture, current politics, sidebars about interesting trivia, places to stay and eat, and books you might want to read. It's a good guide to a place that needs a guide.Smallchief

In this environment where everything we think and believe is under question, negative scrutiny and distain here is this book. I adore a happy ending and at points I was so lost in the telling style of the story I forgot this was a real life event. I like the book because everyday people walking down the street needs reasons to hope and believe that what they do matters and they can fight to save the things that are important to them. A lot of people came together against the odds and fought tremendous obstacles to save their school and a whole neighborhood school system. Not just for today or for one year, these people put a legacy back on track. Who doesn’t love a real life happy ending. Read this book and find grit hope dream and a plan for your school and community.

This is a very readable book about an urban school in Texas which is underachieving and threatened by closure. It focuses on the stories of three people - the principal, a science teacher (who also is part of a Christian fellowship group), and the basketball coach. This is a success story, and it is clear how critical great leadership is to turning a school around. There are short student profiles interspersed, but it is these three adults who are the center of this story of reform. As a teacher myself, I wanted to know more about the other pieces of the puzzle that worked to create success, but I was okay with brief references to these factors. This book did create drama, especially in the basketball team's big game and the final student testing that would determine whether Reagan High School would remain open. While I am not religious, I could see how religion did play an important role in the life of a teacher and many of her students. There were times when I was concerned about this getting too preachy, but it usually stopped short of going too far in that direction. I enjoyed reading this book.

This book presents a fascinating look at the attempted closure of Reagan High School in Austin Texas and what that really means to the students and teachers who would have transfer to a school far from their neighborhood. The author personalizes the true meaning of loyalty and dedication as the principal, teachers and students fight to save their school against an impersonal and unrealistic government bureaucracy which has little regard for the students' needs. This story shows clearly why educational reform is so important and how even the unlikeliest of students will succeed given the right environment and support.

Even if I didn't know the author, I would still recommend this book. The author has a talent for giving the reader the feeling that they are in the school experiencing what is happening there and in the lives of those portrayed. This true story is riveting and inspiring reading. It is a must read for anyone who cares about educating our children, now and in the future. The people in this story come to life and you are there, rooting for them. This paperback version was released in 2013 and contains an epilogue updating the reader on the book's main figures (including the status of the school). Hopefully readers will spread the word about this informative page turner.

Michael Brick's incredible talents as a reporter and as writer have enabled him to describe what's really been going on in U.S. Public schools as reformers focus on tests, charter schools, teacher bonuses and other incentives that, in the end, make it even harder for the children who have least in our society to get a good education. The book is also a great read, with vivid characters and a page-turning narrative. Michael Brick is a genius.

Brick is an amazing writer.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. It describes the struggles and triumphs of a struggling school and the community in and around it. The writing was energetic, and there was enough background on each of the main characters to allow a deeper understanding of their motivation.

Very informative book and well written. Makes you wonder a lot about why parents don't show greater love for their children and get them to school everyday....and what is wrong with the state of Texas that they don't invest more in education.

Good book. Made me finally write down my "behavioral" answers instead of winging it. Nailed my next 2 interviews.

I was seeking for a new job and went through a series of interviews. Although I was not a job hunting newbie, this book still helped me quickly mitigate some worries and imagine potential questions in my most recent job interviews for a software engineer. Especially, the questions are well organized into individual chapter topics, and the answer strategies provided by the author assisted me to create my own answers to interview questions. This book is by all means worth for job hunters. Whenever you want to have a job change, you certainly need to have a copy of this book in hand.

Rife with grammatical errors that really hurt the author's credibility and make the book difficult to read.Helpful list of questions to expect in interviews, and some basic strategy on what to think about in structuring your answer, but I don't find it too profound. There are plenty of better purchases out there.

Helped prepare me for my flight attendant face-to-face!

Good structure, clear info, great to challenge memory and find examples from your own professional experience. I highly recommend it.

Good to have

Concise, clear presentation with straightforward answers. I've read few other interview preparation books but this one is simply my favorite because it not only asks all the questions I was asked in the past interviews but it gives clear examples of how to answer and how not to answer. I only wish i read it earlier.

I'm usually one who can't stand to read a book that hasn't been edited well, but I decided to push past the many strange idiomatic quirks (the author, I'm guessing, is not a native English speaker) because the content is so good. There's a very thoughtful theme to this book: analyze every question first to determine what the interviewer is seeking; then apply a story-telling strategy of scenario-attack-outcome. It's very simple and therefore very usable. I made myself a crib sheet with all the stories I plan to prepare before my next big interview, and I'm grateful for this book's wisdom.

Frank D. Luna's Direct3D books have been the standard ever since the release of his first in 2003. While his second book was a fairly extensive rewrite focusing on the introduction of shaders, The DirectX 10 book is a fairly direct translation of the DirectX 9 shader approach book. While there is not a great amount of new content focusing on new shader effects, this book does a great job of translating the material to DirectX 10. The geometry shader chapters do provide new content and explains the topics well. The one disappointment is in the removal of some chapters from the last book. There are several that are missing that would provide more value and I do not understand their being missing. While DirectX has been updated to version 11, the DirectX 10 feature set still provides a good basis for DirectX 11. When Luna releases the update for DirectX 11 it will undoubtedly be of the same quality as his previous works.

Most outstanding graphics programming book I had ever read. I got this book in June 2011 and after studying it in detail, was much better informed about graphics technology in general and Microsoft DirectX specifically. Frank Luna explains these topics well and his writing is superb. When I read the book, I was using technologies that were based on DirectX. Today, not so much. Regardless, the description of graphics concepts as presented by Frank Luna can provide some strong insight into graphics technology. If we could see a book from this author related to OpenGL, that may be a great next step.

I haven't read all of it yet but I have worked my way into it pretty far and i have to say, this is a great book. I started learning DirectX10 through a different book and it just threw all the information of 3D programming at you in 300 pages. This book is fantastic, it goes into perfect detail of why you should use that style, or what a specific line of code does instead of saying, like it does so many times in other books ("You don't need to understand what it's doing, you just need to understand that every program has it") or ("Just add it in, the technical information behind it is beyond the scope of this book"). Frank Luna has a way of explaining something so it makes sense but you haven't lost interest midway through the explanation. The math prerequisite in the first two chapters of the book is pretty strait forward, just make sure you have a graphing calculator handy for some of the vector algebra. It's pretty basic material that goes a long way like COS and SIN. The actual programming aspect and program tutorials are fantastic. He holds your hand through the steps so its very easy to understand, and the end of chapter exercises are great. They really bring everything you were taught through the chapter with a little bit of a challenge. You'll definitely be challenged throughout the book but nothing you won't be able to handle.Overall, I think if your beginning DirectX 10 or 11 this is the book to get. It covers the math concepts you need to know and walks you through the basics, and intermediate parts of Direct3D. The shipping was fast, it was faster the the estimated shipping date and was packaged very delicately. To be specific it was in a "Medium Flat Rate" box from USPS filled with Packing peanuts and the book was wrapped in plastic.

While I am only halfway through this book, I must say it is superb. I had no previous knowledge on DirectX and it is being a great introduction. The text is clear, the code is neat, and the examples at the end of every chapter are complete and entertaining. What I like the most is the author's verbosity on the maths; he explains how and why everything works, from projection matrices to lighting calculations. This provides a better understanding of the subject and makes coding easier afterward. For those not too used to vector and matrix algebra, the introductory chapters cover just that. Also, even though Win32 programming knowledge is assumed, the author has included a brief tutorial in appendix A which covers the topics he touches during the first chapters.Another aspect to point out is the way the chapters are laid out. Every chapter so far starts off by shooting you with some theory and providing ad-hoc code snippets. This gives you the chance to put everything together yourself and then compare your work with the author's. In my opinion this is the best approach the author could have taken. By the way, the author's code actually works, so you won't have to spend any time reverse engineering faulty sample code.In conclusion, this is a must read for anyone getting started on dx10!

Having some experience with DX9, I wanted a text that clearly explained the capabilities of DX10. I previously had purchased and used Wendy Jones' and Peter Walsh's books on DX10. I was disappointed in them because they never bothered to take on the topic of window resizing. Why?Frank Luna's latest is a welcome treat. I would have liked to have seen it sooner, but better late than never. Those readers fearful of vector and matrix arithmetic and algebra will undoubtedly stiffen up because Luna starts with these prerequisites. Such readers should try to tough it out. It will be worth it. Luna's treatment is thorough. Get through it, but with thorough understanding.I've been through Chapters 1-6, and every paragraph and example program has been worthwhile. Good work, Frank.

Review

Wilson is a sophisticated and marvelously humane writer. His vision is a liberating one, and a reader of this splendid book comes away with a sense of the kinship that exists among the people, animals, and insects that share the planet. (New Yorker 20041219)Compellingly interesting and enormously important...The most stimulating, the most provocative, and the most illuminating work of nonfiction I have read in some time. --William McPherson (Washington Post Book World 20050301)A work of high intellectual daring...Here is an accomplished biologist explaining, in notably clear and unprevaricating language, what he thinks his subject now has to offer to the understanding of man and society...The implications of Wilson's thesis are rather considerable, for if true, no system of political, social, religious or ethical thought can afford to ignore it. --Nicholas Wade (New Republic 20071124)Twenty-five years after its first publication, Harvard University Press has re-released Edward O. Wilson's classic work, On Human Nature. A double Pulitzer Prize winner, Wilson is a writer of effortless grace and stylish succinctness and this is one of his finest, most important books...[A] highly influential, elegantly written book. --Robin McKie (The Observer )A seminal, groundbreaking, informative, thought-provoking, enduringly valuable, and highly recommended read. This was written in 1978 and so it gives a good history of sociobiology. Sometimes it is hard for me to understand, as he uses jargon without thinking about who he may be talking to. But usually I got the gist and found it highly interesting and informative. I intend to continue reading his books as to understand human nature would be a wonderful thing.

Really made me think about evolution in a new light. It's hard to escape implications to human behavior and conciseness are addressed in a way that I found inspiring.

This Pulitzer Prize winning work is the third of a trilogy that this great man wrote in the 1970, including, in addition to the current volume, The Insect Societies (1971), and Sociobiology: The New Synthesis (1975). The first of these established Wilson's reputation as the leading expert on the social organization of ants, bees, wasps, and termites. The second is a masterpiece of entomology, and extension of biosocial theory to cold-blooded vertebrates, birds, and mammals, with sub-categories ungulates (critters with hoofs) and elephants, carnivores, nonhuman primates, and finally to Homo sapiens himself. E. O. Wilson is, I believe, the first to conceive of sociobiology as a general field of study covering the manner of live of all social species. Prior to Wilson, several animal behaviorists (a.k.a. ethologists), indeed even in Darwin himself, had written about communalities behavior and emotions across species. But unlike his predecessors, from Charles Darwin to Konrad Lorenz, Robert Ardrey, Desmond Morris, Lionel Tiger and Robin Fox, Wilson's focus is on the organization of social life across species as well as the effect of this organization on the constitution of the species. When I read Sociobiology, the second of the trilogy, in 1975, I loved it in every way, and it, along with George Williams' Adaptation and Natural Selection (1966), started my life-long effort to integrate biological thinking into economics and sociology. I had no problem with the biological argument because I had spent the last seven years or so being a proponent of Karl Marx's early work, especially his Manuscripts of 1844, which developed the idea that there is an innate human nature (Gatungswesen or species-being) which is subject to alienation (Entfremdung) when not supplied with its conditions for full realization (this theory is close to Amartya Sen's approach to `human flourishing,' if you want to see a contemporary version). The only part of this theory that I have given up is the part that says capitalism leads to alienation. That now appears to me to be completely wrong-headed; capitalism plus liberal democracy are the prerequisites in the contemporary world of personal liberation. Of course, there are illiberal and undemocratic capitalisms that entail alienation and worse. Mais, je divague....Edward Wilson wrote this book, he tells us, in response to the bitter and violent reaction against the final chapter of Sociobiology: The New Synthesis, which was the only chapter in the book to deal with Homo sapiens. The criticism was far from impersonal, as the main critics were faculty at Harvard (where Wilson taught), MIT, and other Boston-area academics, some of whom had impeccable scientific credentials. I was a graduate student at Harvard from 1961 to 1969, and member of the Harvard faculty from 1969-1976, so witnessed the events surrounding the political formation of these critics. The anti-Vietnam war and the civil rights movements severely damaged the complacent liberal world-view of many academics who matured between World War II and the Vietnam war. Those with training in the humanities and social sciences for the most part became liberal supporters of the anti-war and civil rights movements, but those with training in the natural sciences, including biology, fell under the spell of Marxian social theory and identified with movements for socialism in the advanced capitalist countries and in the Third World. Many of those members of Boston-Cambridge academia formed Science for the People and other groups purporting to reveal the falsities of bourgeois thought and explain the necessity of a transition to socialism to combat domestic racism and international imperialist wars. The critical point about these groups was their commitment to critique not just bourgeois society, but bourgeois science as an emanation of bourgeois society.I found this aspect of Science of the People and related groups to be both abhorrent, yet fascinating. I considered myself a Marxist, but I had never encountered "bourgeois science" in my years of studying mathematics, physics, and biology. I had always believed that science is science, and unless distorted by an oppressive state or religious power, produces truth (or warranted belief) through open debate, public discourse, and the reward of excellence. I had read about Lysenko in the Soviet Union, who gained the confidence of the country's Communist (and scientifically illiterate) leadership by claiming that Darwinism was "bourgeois science," who had dissidents from his Lamarckian views shot and exiled, and whose wild ideas eventually led to agricultural crisis in the Soviet Union. I therefore had nothing but contempt for the Science for the People group, and often noted that few were professionally trained in the areas they glibly wrote about, and their critiques were simple-minded and naïve. Moreover, the idea that they could speak of "bourgeois science" and "socialist science" gave me chills. These were highly intelligent, highly sophisticated (at least in natural science) academics at the top of the academic heap. Is this what our country was headed for? Would social change bring us Lysenko's all over the place?Of course, I was far from alone being a progressive academic who refused to play the Science for the People game. Noam Chomsky, Hilary Putnam, and many others did not participate. But the Science for the People crowd had a very loud voice. Accusing Edward Wilson of racism and right-wing fascist sentiments, critics claimed that sociobiology was political ideology, not science. In November 1975, a Science for the People offshoot, the Sociobiology Study Group spearheaded a violent and multi-pronged attack on Edward Wilson, the co-signers of the group's first public statement (appearing in the New York Review of Books) including Wilson's prominent colleagues, Richard C. Lewontin and Stephen J. Gould. The attack on Edward Wilson expanded country-wide. He was assaulted by Maoist activist students while he was speaking at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting. Ironically, Stephen Jay Gould was co-speaker at the event. Gould took the microphone, apologized to Wilson, and denounced the perpetrators, quoting Lenin's critique of misplaced violence. Wilson recalled, however, that after the attack "No one asked [the attackers] to leave the premises, no police were called, and no action was taken against them later."In fact, the argument concerning humans in Sociobiology: The New Synthesis is carefully considered, measured, and temperate, hardly justifying the venom of Wilson's critics. Sociobiology supports comparative studies across species of such aspects of social behavior as cooperation and reciprocity, conflict and cheating, and kinship and mating. Such behaviors have a strong genetic basis in that rarely would a member of one social species have the proper predispositions and capacities to operate successfully in the social context of another, and animal societies tend to be strikingly similar even when widely separated in time and space. Moreover, because all social species are the product of Darwinian evolution, the same must be true of human societies, and since social cohesion in human societies depends on sharing common ethical norms, morality itself must be the product of evolution.Critics of sociobiology are fond of labeling any argument in which genes affect social behavior "genetic determinist.'' Wilson certainly recognizes the effect of genes on behavior, but is equally insistent on the effect of culture on genes. "If culture has evolved for millennia under the influence of a biological human nature, it is equally true that human nature has evolved... Gene-culture coevolution, the synergistic coupling of the two forms of evolution was inevitable.'' (p. xi) Later, he reinforces this point by offering an observation that has come to be central to evolutionary game theory, "sociobiological theory can be obeyed by purely cultural behavior as well as by genetically constrained behavior." (33) However, Wilson infuriates his critics by claiming that "the humanities and social sciences shrink to specialized branches of biology," but he means this in the same sense that chemistry is a specialized branch of physics and biology is a specialized branch of chemistry. I find it quite misleading to use the term "specialized branch" in this way. Chemistry introduces numerous central concepts that are absent from physics, and biology has many more that are absent from chemistry. Similarly, the humanities cannot in any sense be reduced to social science, nor can social science be reduced to the natural sciences.Typical of Wilson's mode of argumentation is his use of Chomsky's theory of "deep grammar" to explain how a universal human predisposition to understand deep grammar can be compatible with huge cross-cultural variation in the actual linguistic behavior of groups. He could have added, as an example of gene-culture coevolution, that the physiology of language production (tongue, lips, facial muscles, and larynx) evolved over hundreds of thousands of years to facilitate verbal and facial communication.Wilson clearly recognizes in On Human Nature that the fact that humans are not infinitely malleable is a fundamental emancipatory message. Whereas Utopians have for centuries dreamed of creating the perfect society based on inculcating prosocial values and suppressing selfish and antisocial values, Wilson recognizes the totalitarian implications of ideologies, such as Marxism and some forms of liberalism. Wilson argues that we evolved our human morality in small hunter-gatherer societies over hundreds of thousands of years, and the hunter-gatherers of the Pleistocene tended to be egalitarian and tolerant, thus explaining the universal attraction of democracy and civil liberties. He argues, for instance that such institution as slavery and communal child-rearing have reappeared throughout history, they are not in fact very compatible with human nature, so they tend to be short-lived and to disappear.Typical of Wilson's mode of analysis, he argues that humans, especially males, are predisposed to being aggressive, but aggression can be kept to a moderately low level through good laws. Wilson even offers the now standard argument that women were not subordinated to men in most hunter-gather societies, so that the idea of gender equality is quite compatible with basic human nature. He argues that the relaxation of discriminatory norms against the full participation of women in public life would release a huge reservoir of talent, but enforced equality of outcome between genders would be unlikely to work in many areas of social life. He argues that homosexuality is found in many animals and must be considered a common sexual variant in humans. He even offers a "kin-selection" theory of how homosexuality can maintain itself in a biological population. Concerning altruism, Wilson speculates that most human altruism among non-kin is the "soft altruism" called by Robert Trivers "reciprocal altruism," but he also speculates that "hard altruism" of the sort analyzed by Darwin, in which individuals sacrifice inclusive fitness for the group, might have evolved and may be important in modern society.Naturally, Wilson gets in his licks against his critics, briefly in the Preface and at greater length towards the end of On Human Nature. "The strongest opposition to the scientific study of human nature," he observes, "has come from a small number of Marxist biologists and anthropologists who are committed to the view that...nothing exists in the untrained human mind that cannot be readily channeled to the purposes of the revolutionary socialist state. When faced with the evidence of genetic structure, their response has been to declare human nature off limits to further scientific investigation." (191)In his concluding chapter, Wilson offers three areas in which sociobiology might contribute to making a better world for humans. First, "a biology of ethics will make possible the selection of a more deeply understood and enduring code of moral values." (196) Second, he argues that "a correct application of evolutionary theory also favors diversity in the gene pool as a cardinal value." This implies that "master race" politics, eugenics, and other "genetic improvement" schemes should be rejected. Finally, and following the Enlightenment thinkers, he argues that "universal human rights" can be defended on the basis of a "universal human nature."There has been an explosion of sociobiological research in the three decades since Edward O. Wilson wrote On Human Nature. My interpretation of the evidence is that it strongly supports Wilson's moderate statements almost perfectly, and gives the lie to his critics of all stripes.

Let me add my econium for this wonderful book, which received the Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction, and is likely the best introduction into the emergent field of sociobiology (of which E. O. Wilson is progenitor). The book is deftly, wittily, and elegantly written with great confidence and assuredness. The first half of the book introduces the reader to the promising field of evolutionary psychology, which, for the first time, promises to ground psychology on science rather than ideology. The book rings the death knell to Freud, Jung, pop-psychology, and other pie-in-the-sky notions that have mascaraded as a "human science."The second half of the book addresses four of the most focal concerns of human nature: Aggression, sex, altruism, and religion, on the basis of sociobiology theory. The emergence of this endeavor begins with genes, evolution, and human enculturation, not with theories about infantilism, phallocentrism, and neuroticism. The topics are sufficiently covered in enough detail to keep the reader's interest and sustain the arguments, but with the intent of being introductory and accessible rather than sallying into the esoteric and academic. The consequence is a wholly different orientation toward what is meant by "human nature." The concept is no longer the stuff of speculative metaphysics by armchair philosophers and psychologists, but a true science evolving out of the science of evolutionary theory and genetics. The implications are not quasi-scientific, but truly scientific. Humans do indeed have a "nature," and it is based on nature, not in the imaginations of wishful thinkers. No one, not already exposed to sociobiology, will finish reading this book unaffected for the better. Wilson, the author of "Sociobiology," "Consilience," "The Future of Life," and other enjoyable works, will find a plethora of other authors and books flooding the market with scientific insights into man's true "human nature," including "The Adaptive Mind," "The Moral Animal," "Non-Zero," and "Unto Others."

Wilson's take-on the human nature sometimes approaches to reductionism and biological determism but he draws a delicate line leaving HN unpredictable and complex enough not to be manipulated. This book is probably the best in trying to explain the human behavior (sex, altruism,religion..etc) in relation with genetic and cultural evolution. The latter started to evolve for some 10.000 years since human first became hunter gatherer while the former has lasted millions years. taking on each main topic briefly Wilson have targeted layman and thus simplified the matter to be easily digestible.I found Steven Pinker's Blank Slate highly influenced by Wilson. Blank Slate is a good book if readers would like to read similar books.

I am a big EOW fan. I got this book at the same time as The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins and have to say that On Human Nature is about a million times better than The Selfish Gene. I've read this time and time again; and he has a literary style like no other. All detailed with supporting facts and grounded in science.

Aces all around, promise, delivery, packaging, product.

A classic on why we do what we do, from everything to fighting and reproducing. This gets down to the nitty gritty on our DNA and genetics and the ingrained behaviors we have and why it is important.

Joshua Jordan, former U.S. spy-plane hero now turned weapons designer has developed a new missile defense system – the Return to Sender laser weapon. This could be straight out of the news media. The political atmosphere portrayed in this book sounds so today, even though the book was written in 2010.Blessed those who hear the words of this prophecy and heed it. Revelations. Not only was this book political, it was also personal. Joshua was in the fight of his life. Would he have to give his life and his family's life in order to do what was right?Five-Star Read. I loved it!

I really tried to like this book, but had to quit at the 17% mark as not many things made sense. The scenes were jumbled and really didn’t connect, which is surprising as I’ve read other books by LaHaye and enjoyed them. This one had a lot of potential based on the description, but the writing just wasn’t very good and this one needs a good editor to help hook the reader much earlier vs. slogging through it. I would give this one a wide pass.

I didn't like the first half of this book at all. It was scattered around so much and too many characters were thrown at you. It took me almost 2 months to get through it. I finally made it past the first half and it got.more interesting. Finished the 2nd half in no time. I'll give the next book a try to see if this series is worth pursuing.

I would reccommend this book to anyone who has given any thought to the place every day news plays in molding even believer's thoughts. We are taught all our lives we can trust our government, but can we? In God Only Çañ we Trust.

I enjoyed the Left Behind series tremendously and know that Tim LaHaye knows the scriptures well. The apocalypse portion of the story was exceptional. I did not enjoy the political jabs at the liberals/progressives though. I don't believe that you can only get to heaven if you are a conservative politically. It shadowed an otherwise well written story.

I purchased The End Series for my adult son. We both enjoyed The Left Behind series which was popular in the 90's, in fact, he had started reading them first and encouraged me to read them as well! We were huge fans, I think we both read the complete series twice. I was looking for something to send him, as he loves to read, and I happened upon these. I was skeptical wondering how they could top Left Behind. My son says these were great! He read all three books in a week and said it was even better than Left Behind! When I jokingly mentioned he should have read slower, he said he couldn't put them down. Maybe he'll let me borrow them so I can see for myself?

AT first, I thought the book was all over the place, but then everything came together in the end and was very fun and dramatic. You need to pay attention and should not read this book while sleepy. Great plot!

I love this book and the whole series. It has an amazingly powerful message and is more of a sneaky book when it comes to its message. The Left Behind Series kind of bashes you over the head repeatedly with the message of redemption and forgiveness. Which is why I love that series too. BUt this one sneaks in to peoples hearts and gets them thinking. I have 2 of this series of books now. One for me and one to pass around to friends and family. They all got pulled in by the suspense and action and ended up having a really good conversation with me about it.
