This could really only be of interest to owners of small boats who may have intended to navigate these rivers. Even then, although not obvious from the book's description, it appears only related to issues just after the war that split Yugoslavia apart. It's relevance to today's situation would appear to be extremely little. It says very little indeed about the towns visited except what the author and his crew member found to eat, and how they dealt with police and customs officials.

I read this book as a preparation for a river cruise which took in the Danube and Rhine rivers. I found it a helpful introduction to the sights along the applicable portions of these German and Austrian rivers. There was a lot of information on the locks and the usage of different types of boats on the rivers, which helped me to understand what was going on from day to day. There was a lot of discussion of the struggles involved in getting a private boat up and down the rivers and from what I could tell that is still pretty current (pun not intended, much). The writing style is clean and educated. As an adventure travel book, it is an enjoyable diversion for an evening or two.

The book arrived in plenty of time and is in great shape. Makes a great read, but could be a little longer....

Not what I was looking for. This is like a diary of a small boat trip up the Rhine.

I thought the perspective would give me an appreciation of the rivers I will be on. I am going from Nuremberg, Germany to Budapest, Hungary. I have had house boats on lakes and rivers here in the US in the past. The book dealt mostly with the issues they faced as small boaters at that time. They had all the problems of navigating from one country to another, ie passports, visas, and permissions as well as a first experience on the rivers they traveled.
