Well Explained But College Level Molecular Biology Applied to the Genetics and Behavior & Observable Characteristics of PlantsClear Explanations are given by Dr. Singer and she relates the genetic and evolutionary characteristics of plants such as the pollination cycle. Most os the explanation is approachable even though in my case my formal education was in Computer Science and Business. Where some facts seem difficult to comprehend the nature of the author's explanation is to relate molecular biology and genetics to behaviors and visible (smell-able) characteristics that are common knowledge about plants, so the inherent order of nature is apparent.
Maxine F. Singer is a molecular biologist with a long and respected career in gene research. It wasn't immediately apparent to me why she authored a book about flowers intended for a general audience. But "Blossoms" is about the genetics of flowering, which Singer explains as clearly as she can while admitting that there is still much that is not understood. The book's organization is straightforward. The author takes the reader through some background about genes, then how and why plants flower, how they get their shape, color, and scent, organized into five parts consisting of twelve chapters. The book's first part introduces us to flowers, which have been around a whopping 130 million years. They have been around so long because "flowers are the sex organs of plants," necessary for reproduction. Singer provides brief instruction on the naming system for plants, the discovery of genes, the basics of cell reproduction, and the timing of flowers. The book's second part is perhaps its most technical. It is about genes, not specifically about plants. Singer explains that "a gene may be defined as a heritable unit of biological information" and goes on to discuss how DNA embodies information in genes, how it is replicated, how gene activity is regulated or switched on and off.In the book's third part, the discussion returns to flowers: How they know when to bloom. Singer discusses the roles of maturity, hormones, temperature, light, and circadian rhythms in determining when a plant will flower. Part Four moves on to the flowers, themselves: how they get their shape, how plants switch from leaves to flowers on the meristem, the genes and proteins involved, why flowers form in concentric circles, etc. The books' fifth part addresses how flowers produce color and scent, which is made in the petals. Singer takes us through a lot of pigment molecules for common flowering plants and explains why commercially produced perfumes never get it quite right.Maxine Singer probably writes as clearly as possible about the genetics of flowering. Inevitably, parts of her explanations are tedious, but I found her writing as a whole to flow well. I'm not sure whom she is writing to, however. Who is the audience for a slim, introductory text on flower genetics that assumes no biology background and is barely illustrated? There are only four pages of color plates. Some of the concepts beg for illustration, including microphotographs. I had trouble visualizing where some of this stuff takes place.I hesitate to recommend against "Blossoms" because its information is good. But I think it would be a lot more appealing if it were illustrated with more photographs and interspersed with practical advice on how to choose and care for flowering plants, like a flower horticulture handbook complemented by a genetics lesson. A book like that would appeal to gardeners, whereas I don't think this one will.
This is definitely a book for a niche market, but it’s a bright little gem for those it is meant for. Singer’s enthusiasm for her topic shines through and definitely adds much to the book. Most people who will enjoy this book are ones with a deeper interest in plants and/or genetics. It offers the best, reasonably brief description of epigenetics I have read and is highly recommended for that alone if you are seeking to understand epigenetics. Here’s a brief summary of what’s inside, straight from the book:“Part I of this book introduces some of the ideas that underlie the science that follows… Chapter 1 is about names, the names of plants, of flower parts, and of genes… Chapter 2 is about the similarities and differences between plants and animals… Chapter 3 summarizes how plants know some of these things (about the environment and the plant’s own maturity) even without the senses that inform animals.â€â€œStories about what genes are and how they work, derived from research, form Part II… Chapter 4 describes how DNA molecules embody the information in genes… Mechanisms for turning genes on and off are essential for biological success and many genes function as on/off switches for other genes (Chapter 5).â€â€œPart III describes how a plant knows when it is time to flower… Chapter 6 describes the role of maturity and hormones in flowering… The subsequent chapters (in this section) describe what plant scientists have learned about the way plants respond to environmental signals that are important for flowering. By the end of Chapter 8, everything will be ready to begin the formation of a flower.â€â€œPart IV is concerned with how plants construct flowers… Chapter 9 traces the story of the switch to flower formation… Chapter 10 describes what has been learned about the complex processes by which flowers with special shapes such as snapdragons and daisies form.â€â€œPart V summarizes the ways in which a plant decorates its flowers so as to attract pollinators… Extensive knowledge about plant production of color (Chapter 11) and perfume (Chapter 12) has accumulated over the centuries.â€This book is a outstanding in the way it takes a deep look at a small part of biology and offers it in an interesting, well-explained, and enthusiastic way.But that’s JustMe.
