ELNA BAKER is a Mormon stand-up comedian and writer. She has performed in many of New York City’s hottest venues, including Caroline’s and the Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theatre, as well as on NPR’s This American Life, and received grants for her work from Yaddo and Breadloaf. Baker lives in New York City.

Really enjoyable book -- funny, and Baker has a nice confessional style. Really interesting glimpses into the psychology of a liberal Mormon, the Mormon singles culture, the anguish of wanting to be thin, the struggle to carve an identity in your 20's. I highly recommend this, with a few caveats.I confess I didn't read this in one sitting, or even one year. I gave up on it after about 40 pages last year, but revisited it this year, got past a boring bit, and devoured it in three days. The book is brilliant at moments, but it's also peppered with flat scenes that make you wonder, why would Baker think this was important enough to tell us? For example, she frequently described bad jokes she made, that didn't work, or that made a conversation awkward, and while that gives us a sense of her personality, after a certain point, I've had enough. They're the kind of things that I can imagine working well in a stand-up routine, read out loud, but just aren't compelling in a book.I think the title is unfortunate -- it's wordy and awkward, and the most interesting scenes and observations are not from the dances. Baker's annual visits to the dance strike me as a forced literary device, rather than something that was really important to her or interesting for her readers.

This was a fun read...but some things in it disturbed me. First the good: it's very funny. I laughed out loud a lot. She's a great writer. Very likeable. I really enjoyed the book. The bad: I was very disturbed by how she lost the weight in the book and it seemed the author had no qualms about it. She starved herself obsessing over every speck of food and I felt really bad for her. But there was no discussion about the toll this took on her, but honestly I felt the real story was right there...in the fact that she had the self control to lose 100 pounds through extreme starvation and diet pills. I felt sorry for her. I found that disturbing. I hope she is over struggling with dieting and cares more about health than weight now.

This book was recommended by a colleague who said he stayed up all night reading the book until he finished it. I cannot fathom what he found so interesting or enthralling, my apologies to the author. The book does contain some very interesting and funny parts but overall I had trouble relating to the protagonist and her problem reconciling her Mormon religion with her choice of men she dated. She also recounts her weight problem, which is something most of us can relate to at some time in our life.I think her weight was a shield against the outside the world and her Mormon faith comforted her when her weight frustrated her. But with the change in weight, our girl also changes her view of Mormons and others. If you are a person struggling with your faith, this book may validate your struggle. I would much rather read more about Baker's jobs (funny story about working at FAO Schwartz) in the Big Apple than her problems trying to remain a good Mormon while trying to date boys. Flashes of brilliance but overall not worth sacrificing a good night's sleep.

As an independent Mormon girl living in New York City, Elna Baker is a mass of contradictions. Yet she tackles her quirks and foibles with such humor that I laughed throughout the entire book. There were awkward stories of dating mishaps, a comically awful story of working as a doll "adoption agent" at FAO Schwarz, and a very poignant story of falling in love with an atheist.This was the most honest and lively faithful Mormon memoirs I have read to date. The author was honest enough to acknowledge the issues within her religion but also managed to communicate her enormous love for her Mormon family. On some level I can identify with Elna Baker - I was born into a faithful Mormon family. I too struggled to balance my independence and dreams with the rigid expectations of my religion. Elna was able to tackle the issue with a humor that I lacked. But irregardless of my own background, I do think this is a book that would resonate with most people, as the underlying story is about a girl trying to find her place in the world.My only issue with the book is that there wasn't much in the way of resolution. The author is confused at the beginning and confused at the end. But as the in-between parts are so fun and lively, this is only a minor fault.
