Ive been reading and enjoying Gotham by Gaslight for decades. Mike Mignola, who went on to create the cult favorite Hellboy, had a lot of early success with DC comics. Gotham by Gaslight puts the Dark Knight against Jack the Ripper. DC ran these stories as "elseworlds" that exist outside the normal DC continuity. Mignola is one of the most influential artists of the 80's DC comics continuity. His art, simplified and dark is to comics what Edgar Allen Poe is to literature. RIchly textured and just a joy to look at, Gotham by Gaslight is noit only one of Mignolas best, its also one of my favorite Batman stories of all time.,

Presented in this volume are two stories, both written by Brian Augustyn . The first, Gotham By Gaslight, features moody -and quite beautiful!- artwork by Mike Mignola and P. Craig Russell. The featured story imagines a Bruce Wayne/Batman who lived in the late 1880’s and confronts Jack The Ripper, who has made the move from London to Gotham City. The second story, illustrated by Eduardo Barreto, is titled Master of the Future and is a nod toward the Jules Verne’s Master of the World, one of the last stories written by the sci-fi pioneer and which features a Nemo-like madman who gets around in -and attacks!- from a fearsome airship.Both stories are good in their own way, though I felt the stronger of the two stories was Master of the Future. While I wasn’t quite as wowed by the story presented in Gotham by Gaslight (the “surprise” ending was anything but), I personally enjoyed the art by Mignola and P. Craig Russell a little bit more.Please don’t take that as a knock against the work of Mr. Barreto!I just happen to be a MIke Mignola fanatic and seeing his pencils inked by also incredibly talented P. Craig Russell is a unique treat.So there you have it. I enjoyed the writing in one story a little more than the other and enjoyed the art in the other story a little bit more than the other.I’m quibbling here. The overall work is definitely worth a look.Recommended.

Batman Gotham By Gaslight by Brain Augustyn and Mike Mignola is an Elseworlds tale that sends Batman back to the Victorian Era where he encounters Jack the Ripper in late 19th century Gotham. In a two-part arc with Gotham by Gaslight and Master of the Future. The first Arc Gotham by Gaslight was okay it started off interesting with the Victorian Era setting and seeing the origin’s story again. How they incorporated Batman characters to the era was done well, you will see familiar faces. Then it falls off when you get to the Ripper stuff. Jack the Ripper vs Batman should be great stuff, right? At the end it just ended up being underwhelming and mediocre. On top the that the Art wasn’t that good. Leaving the first story Gotham by Gaslight to being okay at best. It picks up in part 2 Master of the Future. A time skip has happened Bruce ends up retiring as Bat-Man and even has a Fiancée Julie Madison. The characters are better in part two more specific the villain, Alexandre LeRoi who ends up being more interesting than Jack the Ripper. The Romance was done well too. Julie Madison one of Batman’s lesser known Romances ends up being surprisingly well done. Add better characters, a better story with an improvement to the art and part 2 ends up best part in Gotham by Gaslight. At the end Gotham by Gaslight was a fun read. Part One may have been disappointing but Part Two more than makes up for it. There’s also an animated movie based on this book, but it ends up being whole different story and not a direct adaption. Gotham by Gaslight is worth a read, its Batman in the Victorian Era in a way we haven’t seen before.

One of the original "Elseworlds" story arcs, Gotham by Gaslight is well known title and a great pickup for fans and collectors of the Bat. A "what if?" story arc that imagines the world of Batman in the late 1800's around the same time frame as the infamous Jack the Ripper murders of London. In this story, Jack flees London and travels to Gotham to continue his killing spree, while also framing socialite Bruce Wayne for the killings. Bruce uses his skills as the Batman to track down the true Ripper to clear his name. In the second arc of the book, Bruce considers retiring the Batman persona only to call upon his alter ego once again when a madman in a steampunk airship attempts to burn Gotham to the ground. All in all, this is a delightful read with jaw-droppingly gorgeous artwork.

Really liked the two stories about 19th century Gotham. Having the Dark Knight battle Jack the Ripper was fun. What if they were the same person?

A short, somewhat obvious what-if murder-mystery set on the streets of 19th century Gotham, pitting Batman against Jack the Ripper. A hyped-up Batman tale that was at least entertaining but did not live up to the buzz. It had the potential to be a good series; Batman adapts very well to the era.

Amazing graphics & story telling! Absolutely a great book! Highly recommend. The story is told not only in words but by the amazing graphics. Each panel sets a tone for a fantastic ride.

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight was the first tale of DC's Elseworlds label, putting an alternate reality twist on DC's most iconic characters. This TPB features Gotham by Gaslight, as well as it's lesser sequel, Master of the Future. Both are written by Brian Augustyn, but Gotham by Gaslight is undoubtedly the best of both, as we witness Batman of 1889 face-off against the murderous Jack the Ripper, who may have ties into Bruce Wayne's tragic past. While this story is very satisfying and features some great nods to Batman mythology, it's the artwork of Hellboy creator Mike Mignola that really helps it stand out. While not as moody as his artwork would become, it still makes an impression regardless. Master of the Furure finds Batman facing-off against a more generic lunatic as the time period approaches the twentieth century, and while the artwork by Eduardo Barreto is good, the story itself is sadly lacking. All in all though, Gotham by Gaslight is still a worthwhile Batman TPB that is worth a look for Batman devotees, but may be a little hard to get into for those that are newer to the world of Batman.
