Review
"Chasing Denali is a superb blend of history and personal narrative...fascinating." --Lou Dawson, Wildsnow.com "Waterman juxtaposes the outlandish feats of the Sourdoughs with his own coming-of-age story: watching over corpses that litter the hill and sharing a reverent philosophy about conquest. Through its pursuit of mythical heroes, Chasing Denali is a parable of the truths underlying alpinism. An unforgettable tale." --Ed Viesturs, author of No Shortcuts to the Top: Climbing the World's 14 Highest Peaks "This is a finely crafted, literary page-turner that weaves personal narrative and history into a seamless, resonating whole. Chasing Denali transcends and elevates the climbing story genre to an art form while offering a grounded examination of one of mountaineering's great, controversial feats." --Nick Jans, author of A Wolf Called Romeo "Jon Waterman understands as few do the rhythm and spirit of Alaska. In this compelling new book, he brings all of his knowledge, insight, and compassion to bear on a long forgotten mystery of mountaineering." --Wade Davis, author of Into the Silence: The Great War, Mallory and the Conquest of Everest "A fascinating and skillfully crafted book, linking Waterman's own experience and perspective on Denali with that of those amazing tough pioneers with their colorful tales, exaggerations, and at times downright lies. I was riveted by the quality of his detective work." --Chris Bonington, author of Ascent: A Life Spent Climbing on the Edge

An awesome book I couldn't put down! It was incredible to read the story of the sourdoughs and even more incredible to discover the truth that they really were the first to climb Denali. It was just as incredible to follow the authors climb to the top at 60 years old. This is a story that needed to be told. This is also a story that inspired me. Being almost 60 myself, it has given me hope and encouragement that adventure doesn't have to end at an older age.
Jon Waterman is such a gifted writer! In 'Chasing Denali,' he has given us another of his adventure classics, once again depicting the Jungian journey referred to as 'The Hero's quest' by renowned writer, philosopher, and professor, Joseph Campbell. Jon's storytelling ability and expertise as a writer, has turned the quest for conquering "The High One," into a detailed and comprehensive tour de force. It is not just a book about climbing Denali, it is the story of the hero's journey, of any climb, any adventure, and anyone's quest for self-realization.
The book is generally well-written, and tells a good story. Waterman's inclusion of his own story of his final (?) climb of the mountain helps quite a bit. For those of us that are unfamiliar with Denali, it would have been very helpful to include at least one map of the mountain and the surrounding area, showing the various glaciers, couliors, and peaks.
Gave. This to a dear friend who is a hiker .He read it overthe holidayand said he couldn’t put it down, It was a winner
Jon Waterman has a long and intimate history with serious mountaineering and adventure. His knowledge of Denali and Alaska add a persuasive perspective to this historic tale of audacity. From my own knowledge of the mountain, climbing and wilderness travel I can only say he spins a story that contrasts the new and old perspectives with great authority.Fairbanks, is a unique place to this day, the character of it's early inhabitants are examined and much of the story revolves around these individuals. For those not familiar with the early climbing history of Denali, it is all laid out in detail, which sets the table for the controversies that have ensued to this day. Suspense continues to the very final pages! The author's personal experience on Denali form 2016 is included to help the reader put the remote and otherworldly reaches of this high Arctic mountain into an understandable experience.A good read!
Jon Waterman is the de facto expert on the literature of North America's highest peak. This book adds an important dimension to that literature, uncovering important truths about the early Sourdough expedition and about how mountaineering deepens and enriches one's life. I found the passages about attempting the peak later in life especially powerful and haunting, bringing the cold, clear, other-worldly landscape to life, and making clear its ultimate significance.
