Outstanding book. I used this book (I think the 2008 version?) in 2010 and got hired with Social Security Admin in 2010. I purchased the updated version because I am planning a career change... I want to leave the agency AND do something different. I bought other books that I also found to be very, very helpful by Kathryn Troutman. However, this book has a disc in the back with cheat sheet, example interview questions, and several resume templates in MS word format, plus a whole lot more info is on the disc. This disc is invaluable. This is the resume format I used to get the job I have now, and I am using it for my career change.

I've been out of school for almost two years and was really getting discouraged about not being able to find a job. I've heard so many great things about federal employment from the excellent benefits and flexible work schedules so I decided to start looking for federal jobs and gave this book a try. This book is loaded with excellent tips, tricks and examples directly from a federal insider. This book walks you through the entire hiring process from locating available positions to tailoring your resume and cover letters to negotiating salaries. Once I implemented the advice in this guide, I immediately started getting interviews with both federal and non-federal employers. I am now in a great and well paid position, much in part thanks to this book!

Actually bought this (kindle) book after I received a gov job offer. But it was economical and figured worth the investment, since I've never had a fed job. Therefore, half (beginning) of the material I didn't need. However, the remaining portion of the book was helpful, particularly the negotiating salary part. It mentioned so many things the average, non/1st time fed would not know about of possible negotiating options, not just salary. Some current Fed employees I've spoken with didn't even know some til they got in. Knowledge is truly power! Even if some of the suggestions don't work in earning a higher salary/benefits package, it was sure worth a try to ask, so that one doesn't beat themselves up for not trying.

Great book, used the CD to create a striking resume! Get this book and familiarize yourself with PERFORMANCE BASED INTERVIEWING (PBI). USA Jobs has a link to the PBI website at the bottom of each job posting. Access it, read it, practice answering questions.The successful applicant will face an interviewing panel who will award you points for how completely you answer PBI questions. You got an interview - don't show up without practicing how to answer PBI questions. You can and will waste a great opportunity.

I had this book for 2 weeks now and I am glad I bought this book. Great examples and the elaborated information set my mind at ease. The CD is a plus to prepare for an interview: examples of resumes. checklists, templates, KSA & ECQ and web links to internships and professional establishments. Fresh from college or not, this book is worth the money. Suitable for both federal and private corporations. It works because I am getting calls for interviews!

I used this book to “recalibrate” my federal job search and it really did help! I would definitely recommend this book to those that may be applying for federal jobs with limited success.

Good book for those without alot of time on Usajobs....some of the info is outdated like KSAs, etc. But Ill be keeping it handy.
